I have no need for a vacuum pump on my military rig, is there a way to remove it, but retain the hydraulic pump? I'm interested in noise abatement reducing any parasitic load on the engine.

OK, I found out it has to stay! Where does the vacuum pump exhaust the air - I couldn't find anything obvious? I plan to cap the intake pipe to prevent hissing and ingesting debris etc.

Seems to me that capping the inlet would not do anything to reduce the parasitic load - it would still be trying to pull a vacuum. You probably need to take it apart and remove the vanes from the pump if you really want to eliminate any load, IMHO.

Are you sure you never want vaccuum? There are times when it is nice to have like when you borow a trailer that has vaccuum assited brakes or you go to the swap meet and get one of those nice little vaccuum Trico dash fans or you want to add a cruise control from JC Whitney. You could just put a little air cleaner on it and let it pump fresh air. It won't use enough power to ever be noticed.

Interesting thought, but the application is a military M1028 with pintle hook and 4 x 12. 5 ton rated D shackles. I disabled the vacuum pump on the previous engine when I stopped using the TH400 (it used throttle modulated vacuum for the shift points).

I'll check out the Trico fan though and see if it can be made match the military rawness of the interior :D .
