Per Bush's idea, since my last power steering debacle, I decided to do a little more investigating. Bush mentioned that the coupling between the pump and vacuum was important. Well, I was gonna check both when I got home.

Never had a chance. I mentioned in the previous post that I thought I heard the steering pump going. In fact, was the vacuum pump. All of a sudden, all of the noise stopped. As did the power assist of the brakes. As did the HVAC controls.

You thought the brakes were bad when they worked, try with no assist.

So, a new pump is on the way. This time, I'm installing everything myself (will try anyway).

Can anyone help with the procedure as I don't have the cummins manual.

Thanks Bush for the heads up. And thanks in advance everyone for any ideas on pump removal.

Manual Help

I only have a 92 manual, the steering and vac pumps should be the same as yours. PM your hard email address (not web mail) and I can help you out.

I have all 4 pages from the 93 manual on removing/installing a vacuum pump scanned into my computer. If you can open and enlarge .jpg images, and you want them let me know ...

Bob.

Thanks

To all that sent info, thanks. Sincerely, this forum has saved me a lot of money. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Imagine the joy you would experience if you got this type of service at the dealership.

I had a problem on Thursday. I emailed the TDR on Friday, and boom. I had instant help from folks that know what they are talking about.

I appreciate the effort.

Now, if my wife just understood why I keep fixing the truck instead of doing what she recommends "Put a bullet in it"...

Where's the vacuum

Ok, I've gone to AutoZone and Car Quest. Both places have tried to order a vacuum pump, but what they get is the vacuum booster (the little dish shaped part). That's the only thing they can get. Any ideas? I show them a picture of the part, but when they order what is a "vacuum pump" in their computers, they get the booster. I'm trying to avoid the dealer, but I don't know where to go. Does anyone know if NAPA can get the pump, or am I telling them to order the wrong thing?

Thanks as always.
