how do you adj the valves on a 12 valve cummings. 96 3500 dully with 187,000 on it just did lift pump 4 inch exhaust 411 rears

On my trucks initial 24k valve adjustment they required a little adjustment, at 48, 100 and 150k they were right on and the procedure was a waste of time. Others have reported much the same. My feeling is that after the 24k adjustment you can stretch the interval to 100k and they will still likely need no adjustment.

I just bought a '97 with 115k on it. A friend, who is a Cummins tech for a local dealer, adjusted mine to day and said they were real lose. I havent talked to him yet but itsnt that a bad thing?

I wouldn't loose sleep over it. I know of at least two Cummins trucks with over 100k that never had them touched period. Hey, I tried to tell them it would not hurt to check them but what can you do. When I bought mine with 62K, I new from reading TDR threads about the valve adjust. I took it to a diesel shop for a going over. Mech said some were tight, some just right, some loose. Around 24k or so later, I tackled it myself. Guess what, some were tight, some just right, some loose. Checked it twice since then and had to make little or no adjustment. Now at 135k.

jeepnut and TTumolo, seeing you are low on the posting "totem pole" I do have a question. Are up on the KDP and the starter contact problems? 115K is a good canidate for contacts.
