VE Fuel Pump adjust Help Needed

Am new to Diesel's, new to this forum (which is great) and love my '89.

I would appreciate any experienced "hands" helping me on this.

Have not been able to find a tool to fit on the flywheel in order to turn the engine and, for the life of me, can not locate the timing pin in order to get TDC.

Please help.

Welcome to the forums. Some find it easier to use the nut on the alternator with tension on the belt to turn the engine. The pin is buried between the injection pump and the engine. Good luck.

You can use either the fan nut or alternater nut <my preferance> and turn the motor over backwards. It won't turn forward ... the belt just slips. Watch the valves and when the intake is open <valve depressed> adjust the exhaust on that cylinder. You could find TDC by watching for valve overlap on #1 and then adjust all loose valves and mark the damper and then turn over 360 degrees and adjust the remaining valves but that is unnecessary. It's hard to do with a barring tool and impossible to use the damb pin.
When I was at Cummins recently, I asked the service rep how they did it. He said that they use the alternator nut and adjust the loose valves one by one while they are on the backside of the cam lobes.

If you really want one of the tools, the only place I could find one was from Snap-On. It is called a "Cummins Engine Rotating Tool" (I'm not making this up, honest!) Its more commonly called a barring tool. The part # is YA9565.

I tried the logical route when looking for mine, went to a local dealer and asked at the parts department. Was told they couldn't get one. I think he was taking the lazy way out of looking it up.

Try the other way suggested before you buy one, they are not cheap.

I also couldn't find the 'Barring Tool' so I checked out Fritz's web site and that explained it all. http://www.ecpe.vt.edu/~dfritz/ram_frame.html

Took about 2 - 3 hours first time through. Don't forget to buy valve cover gaskets. Better to buy since you are right there then to use old and watch oil seep out after your done. Good Luck.

If anyone wants a "better" engine turning tool contact Jim Leonard(see links). I'll leave it at that.
