2012 6.7 Cummins... did the trans /diff service before st 65k...the valve adjust was my question with 110k... I live in the mountains not unhappy with the brake wear so far given my location... thanksWhat truck?
We checked the valve adjustment on mine at around 150K(the suggested interval) and it was still well within spec.
Mine didn't get reset until they had the head off at 270K for other repairs, and hasn't been touched since, now at 595K. Also, my original brakes went over 500K.
And, if you're just now doing trans and diff service, you're way late on that.
Thanks! I will wait until the 150k mark...Just was under the hood the other week to do this very thing at 150-160K and found them to be within spec and no adjustment needed! If you're not hearing anything different, hold off till you get a few more miles on it. If you were to do now, next time you take in and its around the specified time to do, they'll beat you up to have it done! It was a pretty simple task to do if you have ever adjusted valves before. Only thing I learned was I will make myself a tool to help with adjustment when the next time comes around. I'd take a 6 point socket and TIG a rod on side for the adjustment nut that will allow allen wrench to go through. Things you learn when doing maintenance. Also nice to have extra tools to fabricate into service tools when needed!
Our local diesel mechanic, and main builder in the area, recommends adjusting them at 100K miles and resetting them back to the exact spec, even if they are within the tolerance window. There is a decent difference in airflow from max spec to min spec.
For an example of how small changes impact airflow we set my dad's 06 back to 0.010" (from 0.013") and exhaust to 0.023" (from 0.028") and boost went up 2-3 psi from the added flow.
Basically if you spend the time to check the lash then it's worth the time to set them at their spec.
LOL! Ok u convinced me.... valve adjustment it is... this forum is exceptional, thank you all for taking the time to post your expertise and experience on hereI just did my 06 to the same specs you did and would say they were likely within the Cummins range prior and still made a noticeable difference, well worth it IMO but did it myself so it was free, might feel different if I had to pay someone.
Update On the valve adjust situ... just in spec... tweaked to right on spec... did brakes (pad and rotors) all around... replaced the CVCC filter, it was due... didn’t have time to finish a full EGR clean beyond the filter swap,,, thanks to the poster who put up that video... found 3 leaks, rear axel seal, 2 joints, got them dialed in...got another small one on the bell housing forward of the transmission. Will get that when I do the trans service in 10k..replaced the differential oil and transfer case oil... wasn’t able to fix the tps issue... right front reads zero when inflated... ordered part... however when I was done the tps 0 read on the left rear instead of left front? Wonder what that is... I figured it was a bad sensor... now the fault is migrated to a different tire...dropped a new air filter in because I had a spare and am curious to see how much pine pollen it picks up in the next 5 weeks.. radiator flush... hoses looked good as did the serpentine belt,,, going to detail her tmrw and work on fixing a small driver seat tear...busy dayI had my 99 done at 150 k and they were fine. If truck runs good I would not do it
