This is my first post, however I've been reading quite a bit and learned alot so far.

One thing I haven't found in directions or by searching is when you adjust your valve clearances, and you loosen the lock nut, how do you adjust the stud to tighten/loosen the clearances?

I had my valve cover off once (doing the oil breather modification) and checked the clearances (cold motor). Half were right at the upper end of the spec, and half were just outside of the upper spec. I looked at the lock nut but didn't notice anyway to rotate the stud? I was in a hurry and everything was covered with oil, so maybe I missed it?

I'm trying to remember if it is a screwdriver slot of an allen wrench hex... either way, there is a provision to turn the stud. You will find that some of the studs will stay in the same place as you tighten the nut and others will turn with the nut. As a result, you SHOULD recheck the clearance after tightening the lock nut... and readjust if needed. Take your time and get the feel of things. It really isn't hard, but patience IS a virtue for the job!

I too thought it may be an allen wrench but I can't remember using one for it. I'd probably remember if I had because I always set those lil' buggers down and spend half my time looking for them. Screwdrivers are much easier to find.

If you have a barring tool that is the easiest but if not a ratchet with a socket on one of the bolts in the center of the crankshaft pully is effective.

Allen Head

On my 98. 5 it was an allen head, If I remember correctly it was a 5mm.

I used a 1/2" ratchet with a 22mm socket on the nut of the alternater to turn over the motor.
