I was attempting to do a check of my valves to see if adjustment was necessary, but I can not seem to find this mark on the pump drive gear. There are two holes in the gear 180 degrees from one another and the rest of the face of the gear is smooth. So what is this mark, what does it look like?

I have 120,000 miles on the truck and thought it would be time to check but I can't even find out what TDC is!

Please help.

Thanks

On mine it is a straight line and it is pretty easy to see. It is most of the length of the gear, I did have to use a mirror to see it though from up above. ToolmanTimTaylor likes to post pictures on here all the time, maybe he'll scan the picture of the timing mark and post it here. Oh Toolman.....

I don't know why Holeshot calls your truck the Big White Jerkmobile, You seem pretty nice to the rest of us... ... ... Nice work!

Remember that movie "Short Circuit"?

The leading human character (a female) got upset with her ex-boyfriend and started hitting his Trans AM with a baseball bat... . she used the term: "Big Red Jerkmobile"

Tim's truck is white..... get it?

Well Thats just the way Matt Works. :D

Glad to help.

Ya mean ya can't just take the spark plugs out and feel the top of the piston for TDC????? ;) ;)

Geeze this is a lot of work just to make this stinky, noisy old diesel run better. :D :D :D

Spark plugs- can't find them?

You know, I just can't seem to find those spark plugs. ;)

Any idea where they could be found, because it sure would be easier to locate TDC by Wayne's method?:D :D

Actually, the best or worst part (depending on your point of view) about not having spark plugs is we do not have to try to find the best distance for gaping them to get the best performance.

Why are you trying to find TDC for a valve adjustment?

I've always found it quick and easy to use companion cylinders. No marks or list of what to do when. ;)
