My 01 has 102,000 miles on it now. There is no valve noise. I know Cummins states 150,000 miles, but being used to gas engines, I cringe when I think about waiting that long.

What has everyone here experianced when adjusting their valves? Okay at 150,000 miles? What is the mileage most perform the task. If you do it earlier, are the valves usualy within specs or do you find them loose or tight?

Sorry guys. I just noticed my son asked the same question in July. I don't know how to delet a thread.

this might be crazy but i adjsut mine about once a year wheather they need it to not. they are inspec every time. if you do decide to do it i woudl get the baring tool and a few long extnseions. i put enough extensions on to reach out to the front bumper so i dont heve to keep gettin under the truck. i can run my over head in about 20 min. pretty easy.

Yes the alternator nut will work on some trucks. i was one of the unlucky ones that had to use a scredeiver on the flywheel or get the baring tool... .

I did another 24v today. like all the rest they were close but not on the money the way I like them. (125k)

I did my '01 when it was fairly new and the consistency from cylinder to cylinder was ho-hum. They were within spec but Cummins' "in spec" range is huge. I adjusted them around 10k miles as I recall, later on at about 60-70k I rechecked and they had not moved.

I bought a new '03 and they were about the same from the factory as my '01. I think the tolerances from the factory are not that great and it would be worthwhile to set them by 20k miles, but I think once they're set they will stay very close to where they were adjusted for tens of thousands of miles.

sorry for this dumb question,,as im approching 100 000 on my 02, i like the alternator trick if it works,,but what is the baring tool ??? thanks in advance

I did mine at 50K or so and like everyone else they were OK but needed a little touching up.

Getting ready to change injectors soon. Just curious if anyone has tried adjusting the valves while the injectors were out. Seems like the engine would turn real easy with the injectors removed. . with or without a barring tool. Anyone see a problem with this other than dropping something down the injector bore???

Mike

ok thanks,,i have not looked yet,but i would of thougth you could rotate the motor by turning the balancer, like on a gas engine ?? im assuming there is a main center bolt,,,i will have to look at how the balancer comes off,,,so i can do the killer dowl pic,,,

A lot use the alternator bolt and I did when doing mine. Because I was replacing OEM injectors with RV275's and was in there checked the valve lash and they did not need any with a lil over 100,000 on the clock.
