Valve Adjustment?

When do you know that you need to adjust the valves? I bought my truck used and it had 135,00 and there is no history of it. I currently get between 20-23 mpg and it will rev to about 3,000 with no problems. It currently has 157,000 on it.

Rick, valve adjustment intervals on a 12 valve is something you time though experience. I did mine at 20k, it needed little, 60k even less, 120k it was a waste of time. I won't even check again till 200k.

I need to replace the valve cover gaskets and I was just wondering if I needed to do it now. A shop wanted to do it yesterday, he said that they had the time right then, but they were going to adjust them with the engine warm instead of cold! This is a job that I will do my self when its time. .

RHARVEY,I was pretty much like you, got the truck with 110,000 on it with no indication of when the valves were done last. I had 2 valve covers leaking, so I did the valves and replaced the gaskets. I won't say it was a waste of time, because now I know for sure, but I only had to adjust two valves. It was worth it just for the peace of mind.

My '95 was bought used last month with 113k and the engine looks like the previous owner only did oil changes. Last night I adjusted the valves and it neeed it. the gaskets aren't leaking,but they are pretty hard.
