How hard is it? Can I do this myself, being a backyard mechanic, or should I take it somewhere?

Quite simple really, no special tools needed. You do need to mark the balancer and be able to turn the engine over but I did it with a 1/2 socket driver no problem. Probably wont take you more than an hour start to finish.

Yeah, I appreciate that, my truck has got 115,000 miles on it and I don't think it has been done before I owned it. It just seems a little louder then some other 04's I've been around. It can't hurt to do it.

Mine had about 75k on it and honestly, even though many of the valves were out of spec, I didn't really notice any difference in the way it sounded or ran. The good news is, it is easy, and I KNOW they are right now. I think there is a lot more injector noise than valvetrain noise under the hood. Can't wait until I can afford to redo those puppies.
