Hey Guys,

Been awhile since I logged in here. My truck a 2001 2wd has about 97. 000 on it my question is, when should I get the valves adjusted or do you think I could do it myself?? I do most of my own maint. and have a mech back ground, just don't want to mess this up. Also anyone know offhand which issue of TDR mag. has the valve adjustment info. ?

Thanks in advance,

Rich

I read either on this forum or another one that 150K miles is about the right time to adjust valves on a Gen 2 24-valve CTD. I just had mine done at 155K while the VP44 was being replaced and the FASS and Edge were put on. FYI - The mechanic said that the vlaves were barely out - no more than 0. 002"

Do It Yourself

I do all my own maint... adjusting the valves is easy too. There are instructions psoted ont this website that give you all the info to do it right. I think the 24Vs are 150K miles. Should list it in your owners manual. Just need feeler gauge, barring tool, torque wrench and a little patience.

Some folks use a socket and breaker bar to turn the engine, but I like using the barring tool better.

hope this helps, Wiredawg

Honestly, unless you are really bores, experiencing some engine issues, or have had some head work done, there is no need.

In the 2. 5 years I worked at an independent shop, not one of the Cummins engines that I ran the valves on were out of spec (+/- . 005). Mileage was from 100k to 300k.

Off the hook.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'm off the hook. I will let it go for awhile, the truck is running great. I have maintained it well with oil changes ect. Living in So. NV the body is like new I'm not in a position to buy a new one so at 69 years old this is the last one.

Thanks again,

Rich
