I took our 01' 3500 into the dealer today to be serviced and the mechanic ask me when the last time I had the valves adjusted. He claims they should be adjusted every 30k miles. The mechanic is a CTD owner himself, and started telling me all the things he could do to up the HP. He suggested that I let him block off the waste gate as well as adjust the valves. I told him that I had just ordered two EZ box's for both of our trucks. He and the Service Manager both said they had no problem with that, and that together with the EZ and the adjustements they would be doing would give me a large hot rod. I have always considered myself mechanicly inclined, but I know nothing about diesel engines other than I love to here them rattle! My question is, would I want to block the waste gate? Does anyone have info on the mileage between valve adjustments? Do I have a lunatic for a mechanic?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Also, I would like to thank Rip Rook at www.sourceautomotive.biz for the deal he made me on my two EZ's. Nice guy, I recommend him highly

Your mechanic most likely owns a 12 valve engine, or maybe just isn't comfortable with going "long" on the valve adjustments. See your owner's manual for the official recommendation, which I think is every 100k or 150k. I just had mine done in anticipation of passing the 100k mark. But I don't think you need to do it every 30k on a 24 valve engine. But, if he actually owns one of these rigs, he's probably a "keeper", even if this one recommendation is a hair off the mark.

If your 2002 is like the 2001 (I think it is), the EZ's will arrive with boost elbows. I wouldn't disable the wastegate totally, but the boost elbow will allow higher boost levels. Go with that. JMO

It won't hurt to have it checked.

Several members have reported their valves were out of spec in under the 100K adjustment mark.

Mine were out of spec at 28k, but my truck has seen alot of hard us at the dragstrip.

HC, KatD,

Where exactly is the wastegate, or better yet, where does the boost elbow go? Also, what can I expect out of the EZ Edge? Is it just high end, low end or both? Any better mileage?

Thanks,

LK

D; All of the above.

When I adjusted the valves on my Moms truck it had 125,000 miles on the clock and it had never been done before, and most of them were still with in spec:cool:

When I had the valves done for the first time on my truck it had 98,000 on the clock, it did make a difference in the sound and had better response off the lineOo.

On your turbo housing is a fitting with a line comming out. Follow that line and it'll go to your waste gate. Mines at the bottom of the housing, but mine is a six speed, and I'm not sure if the 5 is in the same place.

The EZ is programable with jumpers that are under the end cover on the box. It comes in the #3 position which brings the power in the earliest. The middle position brings it in a bit later and the #1 position brings it in the latest. It's the same power on all settings, they just determine when you get it. Hope this helps ya.

I'm assuming that this is the small 3/8 - 1/2" line about 4-5" long going from the turbo housing to a small canister also mounted to the turbo?

With my HO, I found the EZ added a good bit of power (by my standards), both low and high end. At the low end, I get a good bit of smoke, but it only lasts for about 2 or 3 seconds until the turbo spools up and then quickly clears. This is on the LEAST aggressive setting. I could not confirm any increase in MPG. Most report MPG increases, but not everybody. One vendor told me that folks with autos are more likely to see an improvement in mpg than folks with manuals. He didn't know a reason; he was just telling me what his customers were reporting to him. The EZ comes with a 60 day money-back guarantee, which both the vendor and the folks at Edge encouraged me to make use of if I wasn't fully satisfied. I'd say if you want mpg, 275 RV injectors are more likely to give it to you; if you want power; the EZ will give you enough that removing it makes your vehicle feel "gutless" even if you were satisfied before you ever tried it.

(What's that everyone says? "Addictive?")
