While your at it, buy the miller timing kit and do that too. You can use the baring tool to turn the motor over while doing the valves.

I have Adj the valves by watching the valve train to get to top dead center #1 then going 360* for the other half. the next time i do it i would like to get the timeing pin in so i can mark the exack location. the pin is tight will not move at all. should it move any at all before going into the hole? or is it stuck?

Isn't there a clip or something on the timing pin indicator to keep it from coming out of the timing gear casing? If not, then what keeps the thing from vibrating loose and falling out over time?

Yeah, there is a clip kind of like a star washer. I couldn't figure out how to put it back, but the friction fit is tight enuff so it won't fall out anyway.

OK, so my next question is if you yank the timing pin out of the gear housing, won't that clip fall off inside the engine/gear housing?

No, it's in the hole after the pin so when the pin is pulled out the clip is usually around the pin knob. Then you can attempt to put it back in after the pin is replaced. Good luck! I put my pin back in and then tryed to find a way to drive the clip back in. Couldn't manage to do it. If you can figure out how to do it without removing the pump, let me know.

I will have some manuals for the 5. 9 up for sale on ebay soon... these are cummins manuals not AFTERMARKET... . very good shape... pict these up when I got in a new order.

Got my Dodge about a month ago with 61000 miles. I don't have any maintenance history records for this truck. Noticed it was a little clattery so I decided to adjust the valves. Its a piece of cake. Just follow the advice about painting the fly wheel at tdc to make it even easier next time.
All the valves except for one were at least twice the recommended setting. Probably was never checked before in its lifetime.
Everything is a lot quieter now.

Funny you guys mentioned that star washer that holds in the pin. Last month, after doing my 2nd valve adjustment, I could not get the pin out, until it finally popped out with that washer around it !!!!!!

On the subject of getting the gap "right".
Get a stepped feeler gauge. You'll have to go to Snap on , or Matco, but it'll save you time too.

PS Sears dont have it.

I'm looking at the Step feeler guage sets and holders in my Snap-on catalog. Which one are lyou refering to? I see one listed which has a holder with offset ends you insert different size feeler gauge blades. Will this one allow easier access? I have been using both straight and bent blade feeler gauges and have problems with the fuel injection lines always being in the way on some valves.

Has anyone used the snap-on "valve adjusting tool" (#V22A)? Does it work and/or make the job easier/quicker? Tool looks like a wrench and screw driver combo in one unit.

My Snap on catalog is about 10 years old, but I have #FB 322.

Proto # is #000M (bent) or #000N (straight)
This catalog is almost old enough to smoke too. #ad

Both are cut on a . 002 differential.
I dont know which is better, straight or bent. I havent adjusted my valves yet.

on the star washer, try a 3/8 drive 1/2" deep socket as a pusher after centering it in the opening by hand. Also the conical indent faces the timing cover.

Good luck. .

Sears does carry a set of stepped feeler gauges it is sold seperatly and as part of a kit, it can be found in the Craftsman Catalog also. I also found timing pin to be a PIA..... After much lube and tapping with a socket it went in. To my horror it didn't want to come out. #ad
I carefully pried pried it back out with a screwdriver. After I finally got it loosened I packed it with vaseline. I will make sure that it remains lubed. Oh by the way I marked the flywheel for future adjustments.

Why not just rotate or bump the engine with a remote starter switch until you are on the backside of the cam lobes, both valves for the cylinder you are adjusting are loose, then, adjusting per specs and bump to a new cylinder. It seems a lot easier then trying to find TDC on an engine without the marks on the pulley and it should be the same. This is the procedure I used for years with Volvos and any other engine I ever worked on. Any reason this won't work on our beloved Cummins? Dr D, Piers?
