I bought 6 valve cover gaskets at the Cummins dealer to repalce my existing (weeping) ones. The original ones came off in pieces and may have been original. I could not do the one under the crossover pipe. On my 1990, it looks like I must unbolt the pipe with four bolts on near the intake heater. I am wondering if there are any problems removing this or any gaskets that will need to be replaced when I do this?

Thanks,

No problem with removing it. But, as you mentioned, the gaskets may get torn in the process. Make sure you cover up the open intake manifold when you have it off. The cummins part for the intake air heater gaskets on my '93 is 3938158. It may be the same for yours, but I'd suggest you call cummins to double check. Have your engine serial number and CPL handy when you call :D

Cheers,

Sean

its kinda odd but I was able to R&R all 6 VCs with out taking off the boost pipe I think if you do them one at a time the VCs next to the tuff one keep you from getting it out I think by taking the one off rear of it than you can do it W/O R&Ring the boost pipe

I got the gasket at the Cummins dealer this afternoon. After seeing it come apart, I realize there are probably two (one on top and one below the heater). But only one broke free, the one between the intake manifold and the heater so I replaced it. It came off in pieces and I had to use a razor blade to get the rest of the gasket off. During the entire process the heater never broke free of the crossover pipe. Hopefully the valve cover gaskets will stop weeping :)

Seeing this heater makes me wonder about glow plugs on the Dodge Cummins - do any models have them?

Thanks,

Brian
