I am having to do my head gasket, but I am wondering since if I have my head off should I get the valves seats checked or is it even worth it? Trucks has 174k probally 30k towing nothing real heavy, well maintained. Just looking for advice

Thanks

Good question, I really dont know a proper answer. Clean the head real good and look for cracks between the valves and the injector hole. The 9mm injector heads had problems with these cracks but most of the time no one knew it untill they had the head off. If you didn,t have any problems before you pulled the head off with smoke/ miss etc you are probably ok on the valve seats. The book should give you a spec for valve protrusion.

Absolutely get a good valve job and check the guides and valve stems for wear. Check for cracks. Also a good time to get the head ported or get a new one and get it ported, if you plan to add fuel over the stock level. (Even the stock 215 hp engines may have cracked heads at high mileage like yours).

I have a cylinder head with about 175K in miles on it sitttnig in my shop that I recently disassembled. It was under stock power for about 140k and mildly bombed for the remainder.

The valve guides were all shot to the point I had heavy deposits on the intake valves from oil leaks. The exhaust valves were pitted and pounded so hard they now have a limp above and below the sealing surface. Further the seats in the exhaust side were pitted and liped as well. Get a good valve job done and if not absolutely needed forgo the surfacing of the head.
