I recently replaced intake valve spring retainers on cylinder 1,2,3,and 4 because they developed cracks. The cracks were caused from the engine run away. The keepers were fine. When I replaced those retainers it brought the valve stems back to normal. Now my question is, if I replace valve spring retainers and do a initial valve adjustment, do I need to readjust because they need to settle in place?

Thanks HC!

IMO if everything else valvetrain related is unharmed then going back to normally scheduled valve adjustment intervals would be OK.

Thanks,

Kent

What do you mean you replaced the retainers and they brought the valve stems back to normal? Were you stems bent or something? Just doesn't sound right the way you worded it.

You should not have to check the lash right away unless you replaced the valve springs. Then you would need to check the adjustment after a few thousand miles since they seated and broke in. Just set it to the specs and check it again after about 25,000-30,000 miles.

It would be a good thing to replace your push rods now and then go about readjusting if you had a run-away. They're cheap. Yes readjust again after 500 miles. If the retainers were cracked I'd replace the springs, keepers, etc..... just to be safe. !!!! Good time to put in heavier exhaust springs. Runaway ?????

How did you stop the renaway ????? Did it lock up ??????

How high did it rev????

Check the harmonic balancer, it has a rubber center, it could have been "run-out", check the crank timing in reference to the timing sensor... . If it did runaway..... We spun the center on one in a service truck and we couldn't figure why it wouldn't run right. It was hard to find.....

I second the push rod idea or at very least lay them on a piece of glass or other known flat object to assure they are not bent.

I'd keep an eye on them, the other springs may have been stressed and may break in the future.

Good luck

Andy

HC,

How did your engine runaway from you? I have a '98 12v as well and would like to know what cause the rpms to get away from you.

Thanks, Joe

Thanks folks for you input, you all been a great help and I have it fixed now with a final valve adjustment. For future referance keep under your hood clear of loose items that can get sucked in front of your filter air inlet!! The lack of air will pass oil through the turbo seals causing a runaway! Again thanks HC!
