What kind of a job is it to replace valve seals on the cummins engine? My truck always smokes white-blue smoke at start-up regardless of outside temperature and continues for several miles and sometimes smokes even after its warmed up. Also i've noticed white-blue smoke at wide open throttle going down the highway. Could this condition be caused by leaking valve seals? I do use about 2-3 qts of oil between oil changes. Other than this the truck starts and runs great and has 115,000 miles on the clock. I have advanced timing to 14 degrees btdc and this didn,t help the smoke problem.

Can't help with the valve seals but I would guess that would be a machine shop job on the head. Two or three quarts of oil could be a small leak in the seals of gaskets. If there are no leaks it could be something else.

The symptoms with the smoke are a classic example of a injector pump on the verge of tango uniform especially a white/blue haze at full throttle. You can set idle fuel with the screw in the top of the AFC and you should be able to almost totally get rid of the smoke on startup depending on temps. Retarded timing will also cause the symptoms but if you have set the timing using the lift method and TDC thats probably not the problem. Have you checked the KSB for correct functioning?
