Hello TDR,

LONG time since my last post here. Mostly due to my switch to the Ferd crowd 2yrs ago. I hope this goes over OK. :)

Anywhoo, the desire for the Ford cab has left me wanting my old engine back. So I'm planning on squezing one in the SD this spring.

During some research I've become convinced that upgraded valve seats would be a good thing for the longevity of the '05 CR I'll be using.

Could someone school me on what it will take to have this done right?

TIA, I thought coming to the real experts would be my best move.

The only thing I've heard about the valve seats is the fact they will "drop" occasionally... it is rare, but does happen. Something about the seat doesn't expand at the same rate as the head and that allows the seat to become loose and fall out...

I have not heard of an "upgrade" to the valve seat, but I have heard of guys using a punch around the edge to sort of "peen" the seat in place to prevent it from happening. But that was a long time ago...

Thanks steve. Sounds like it may not be a major issue. I never had a problem with my 05 for 100k that I had it. But this motor will be sorta wild. Thanks.

I'd do some searching... it was a topic that came up a while ago, then sorta went by the wayside (like there was a rash of dropped seats, then they subsided). I was hoping someone else would chime in here, because I'm by no stretch of the imagination knowledgeable on the subject...

I almost want to say the drop valve seats were the reason DC/Cummins spec'd a 0. 026" exhaust valve clearance on later CRs (a slight increase over the 0. 020" for the earlier versions). I seem to remember that was to allow the valve to take the heat and not the seat?

Cummins changed the material in the valve seats beginning with the 04. 5 CR's. It seems that did not totally eliminate the problem, as the newer engines are dropping them occasionally also. And I believe they were related to high egt's.

I wouldn't worry myself about it, I believe you will be just fine.

OK, Thanks.
