I am hoping maybe someone can tell me what is involved in changing the exhaust valve springs in my 93. I know the 2nd gen trucks don't need this for the exhaust brake, but does anyone know. Maybe even a website where I can find instructions. Thanks.

The 2nd gen. trucks do need the springs if the pressure is over 30 lbs. I have the US Gear brake set at 30 lbs. so no spring change. The 60 lbs springs are the ticket. Without the springs you can float the valves and push exhaust back through the valves. Thats what I was told.

Pull off all your valve covers and start with cylinder one. Turn the engine clockwise with the barring tool counterclockwise until the exhaust valve opens and begins to close. Then turn slowly and watch the intake valve and when it just begins to open, stop. Take off the 13mm bolt and get a big 1/2 inch ratchet and bust loose the 18mm bolt of the top of the rocker tower. Pull the tower and rockers off, being careful not to dislodge any pushrod from its tappet. If you do, you just have to carefully put it back. Now, use all the rags you can and cover up any holes there are so that just the springs are showing. Trust me. Use the spring compressor and when it is compressed, tap on the top of it to dislodge the keepers. Use a small magnet and set the keepers aside on the bench, not on the truck. Take the whole spring assembly and go to the bench and remove the spring and replace it with the new one, and compress it. Then go back to the engine and place it over the valve. If the valve has fallen slightly, carefully turn the engine in the same direction to see if it comes back up. You should hold the valve stem while doing this. Insert the keepers carefully and you may have to push down on the spring to do so. Once they're in, release the compressor and tap on the top of the valve stem to ensure the keepers are in. Each cylinder has a companion cylinder. One and Six are companions, Two and Five are as well as Three and Four. If one is at TDC, then six will be as well. Do six, then rotate the engine and do two then five, then rotate and do three and four. Install and torque the towers after each spring is done, not all at once. Torque the 18mm to 125 ft/lbs, and the 13mm to 18 ft/lbs. Then torque all valve covers to 18ft/lbs. Take your time.
