I had some 35/12. 50/17 Toyo Open Country M/T put on today and when I got home I noticed that didn't reinstall the metal (high pressure?????) valve stems that were on it before. Is this a big deal? What kind of pressure will these take? I checked the air in them and they have 38 lbs. in each tire. What will these valve stems do if I max out tire pressure at 65lbs. while towing? Or any thoughts on IF I should max them (REARS) out while towing my 5er???? thanks...

Valve stems

That happened to me 3 yrs. ago. Had new tires put on, valve stems replaced with the rubber ones, after I got down to hot weather one blew off and another blew off while in the tire shop repairing the 1st one. Had all 6 replaced with steel valve stems. . You should do the same . ;)

I agree wholeheartedly with getting the metal stems put back on. I've had failures in even the highest quality EPDM "high pressure rated" rubber valve stems at 80 pounds. They simply are not designed for the pressure. Not to mention, if you have a dually, putting air in the tires is nearly impossible with normal rubber stems.

Don't let the tire dealer stroke you. Get the metal stems put back in. I had nothing but trouble with rubber stems.

I had Les Schwab rotate and balance all six tires on my dually. I also had them put metal valve stems on, as the rubber/plastic stock ones were almost impossible to fill with my air tool.

I also had them put these on:

They are all metal, make a double seal, self sealing at the top (don't need a valve cap) and Les Schwab charges about $1 apiece for them. The picture makes them look like they have threads for a screw on cap, but they are just ridges that are there to grab the type of air tool that has a clamp on filler...
