Did an oil change today. Filled back up with Valvoline Prem. Blue 15W-40. Put in first two gallon bottles... ... . when pouring in the 3rd gallon, I noticed the oil was much darker than the first two. It also had a different smell.  All 3 bottles had the foil seal intact.

Anyone seen this before? Do you think it's a problem or a need to change the oil again? Engine is running fine.

cheers,

Sean

Don't know if they came from the same case, they were out on a shelf with many other bottles of Valvoline Prem. Blue 15W-40. I'll have to wait for my dad to get back to have him go check the bottles.

If they are different CJ-4 / CI-4 is that a problem? Kinda sucks because the labels on the front look identical. arrrrrrgh

Just did my first oil change in the '06 this past weekend and have used Valvoline Preimum Blue for he '98 for a long time as well. Never noticed any color difference in the blue I am putting in. Will keep an eye out for it next time though.

Formula, try not to panic. If you're really concerned, go ahead and change the oil again if it'll make you feel better.

nah, not panicking :-laf Just the first time I've seen something like that. Perhaps it was just a different batch or whatever. My Dad checked the bottles and said the specs were the same on all of the bottles. I didn't ask if he was wearing his glasses or not though :-laf I'll be down there on Wednesday to check for myself. Truck is running fine, oil smells like usual and oil pressure is the same. It may end up eating at the back of my brain enough to change it again though

I would call the manufacturer and see if there are any recalls or any problems reported with any of their batches. Keep your jugs for future reference. I would change the oil just to be safe. I would also contact the retailer that you purchased it from, who knows they may stand behind their product and give you enough to change the oil and get ride of the bad stuff. Good luck. Oil is very important to you engine that is not the area that chances should be taken or shortcuts.

So... . I called Valvoline this morning. They said that the different color and smell is normal between the batches of oil they make. Said it is due to the additives coming from different manufacturers and having sligtly different dyes in them. The lubrication properties, etc should be the same. Does this make me feel better

I have been using Val. Blue since new and am happy with it. I only have 22,000mi , But if its reccomended from Cummins I believe it to be a reputable oil. I change it every 5k.
