For those of you using Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme 5w40 "full synthetic", how long are you going between oil changes?

I had an oil analysis done at about 5000 miles (the numbers were fine), and I replaced the oil filter at about the same time. My plan was to extent the drain interval to 10,000 miles.

I am planning to tow a 4000# utility trailer from Central NY to Central Florida in June next year and I'm trying to time my oil changes so that I have fresh oil just prior to the trip. Using my average driving miles between now and then, I will probably change before the 10,000 mile target next May unless I extent a drain longer than 10,000.

Disclaimers:

I'm not trying to start an oil war.

I have used "" (quotes) around the word "synthetic" so as to not offend anyone.

I realize that oil drain intervals are highly controversial and opinionated topic.

I would say that as long as you have confidence in your oil analysis you could run it till the report comes back to say change it.

For peace of mind change it before the trip.

This is just what I would do, everything hinges on a little knowledge about products and mostly peace of mind for me.

I run it, and like it. I change mine about every 8-10k, just depending on what kind of driving I have been doing, and when I have time. I don't worry about it knowing that this oil and others run much longer and under more severe conditions all the time.

I would do another oil analysis a couple of weeks before your trip, and if everything checks out, go ahead. Or just change the oil for peace of mind like ronsram said. It's up to you.

Eric

As long as your are not dumping in a ton of fuel heavily sooting up the oil, 10k should be just fine. I would, as you are doing, verify by it by oil analysis a couple of times just for the piece of mind.

So I guess I'm being WAAAAY to excessive by changing my oil every 3,000??? I know the owners manual says I can go longer, but i want this engine to run a while.

Thoughts?

I just switched to it a couple of hundred miles ago. I plan on running it a year, which should be about 12,000 miles, and changing filters at 3 to 4,000 miles. Haven't decided if I'm going to do oil sampling or not. Cummins parts gal said the guys in the shop are using it in their trucks and running 15,000 mile oil changes.

Sure turns over better in the cold temps. That is the main reason I switched to it.

I use it and I love it!!

I do 500 miles on the filter then change it and top off the oil then go another 5000 and then filter and oil change. I haven't done any analysis, but I know I am not doing alot of harm to the engine. I tow in the summer months and I have a stick so I drive easier.....

anyway, thats what I do

I forgot to mention on the first oil change I would shorten the interval. The oil will not perform at it peak until it cleans out all the old oil and gets rid of any deposits that it may clean out.

Thanks for all of the input. It confirms my thinking.

BTW the main reason I want to this product was cold weather starts.
