I am about to do my first LOF utilizing a synthetic at 23k. Considering PBE due to Cummins recommendation, in-store availability and consistency with DC manual viscosity recommendation (2004. 5 manual shows 5-W40 in synthetic, 15-W40 without specification as to synthetic/conventional oil, the 5-W40 of course carrying into lower anticipated temperature ranges). I have always used the Fleetguard Stratpore and will continue to do so. I think I read that in 05 or 06 the factory recommended change interval went way up, doubled perhaps from the 3750/7500 in the 2004. 5. I meet the criteria for the 3750 change interval based on some heavy towing and occasional high OAT operations.

My hope with the PBE is to change both the filter and oil at 7500 miles. I will probably do an oil analysis with the Delvac that's about to be drained, and future changes. Any thoughts on the real-world wisdom of such a plan, especially considering the factory-sponsored increases in subsequent years? I believe it is wasteful (both of natural resources, and my energy, which I guess is also a natural resource) to stick with the tried and true "every three thousand because that's what my Dad taught me and his cars lasted forever" theory on oil changes. While I want my truck to endure, I want to change oil only as necessary.

Also, out of curiosity, am I correct in understanding that Premium Blue Extreme is a true synthetic while Premium Blue is perhaps a blend or conventional oil? Both carry the Cummins blessing, but the Valvoline web site does not seem to use the term "synthetic" in its discussion of non-extereme Premium Blue.

You may want to consider going over to the "bob is the oil guy.com" website. It's free & has over 10,000 members, some of whom are quite knowledgeable regarding lubrication-related questions.

I think many of your questions about oil change intervals & how long an oil will last, in your truck engine, will be answered by oil analysis. If you can't interpret what the results mean, there is a guy at BITOG, named Terry Dyson who, for a fee, will interpret your results, explain them to you & make recommendations. I believe he likes to use Blackstone Labs.

In my '03, HO, with some towing, I ran 8303 miles on Chevron Delo 400 15-40 CI-4 conventional oil. The lab results showed it had a lot of life left in it. The newer Chev. Delo 400's have a CI-4+ rating, now. They have added Moly &, I believe, Boron, to the mix & it is considered to be a very robust oil, now. Some are saying that the difference between the new CI-4+ conventionals & synthetics is not that great, anymore. Chev. Delo 400 & Shell Rotella can be bought at Sam's Club & Costco, in some areas. And it's reasonable.

If you go to BITOG, read up a bit on some of the lesser known oils such as Schaeffer's 7000 (semi-synthetic) & 9000 (fully-synthetic). These oils are considered, by many, in certain parts of the country, to be extremely high quality oils. Schaeffer's has been producing lubrication products since 1839 & use some of the highest quality base oils & additives to create their oils. I'd never even heard of Schaeffer's until I got on the BITOG website.

If I'm not mistaken, your truck requires the new CI-4+ rated oils. I believe they're supposed to suspend soot better than the older formulations & the newer engines create more soot because of the improved emissions hardware & programming.

It seems to me that you get the "most bang for your buck" when using fully synthetics in conjunction with oil bypass filtration systems to help keep the oil extremely clean. You are then able to use the oils much longer, than normal, (sometimes over 100,000 miles between oil changes). However, you do have to change filters & add oil that is lost in the filter changes, which, helps restore the additive packages.

Mobil Delvac One (fully synthetic, CI-4+ rated) & Mobil One truck & SUV (fully synthetic, CI-4 rated) are mentioned favorably on the BITOG, quite often, also, expecially when using extended OCI's (oil change intervals).

At any rate, good luck with your decision. There's lots to think about. Probably would be a good idea to stay within the OCI's that are recommended by DC, to maintain your engine warranty. After the warranty, you can probably get more creative.

I've been running PBE in both trucks for just over a year now. I'm pleased with it so far. I just changed oil in both with 7K on the '98 and 9K on the '04. I also did filter changes at about 4K on each truck. The only reason I'm running it is for the cold starting advantage. I would probably be using Rotella Synthetic if I could have found it. The '98 ran the first 98K on Rotella T.
