The new one gallon bottles of Valvoline Turbo Blue I bought at Checker last week indicate that Cummins has approved this oil for 10,000 oil change intervals in ISX and ISM engines. The old black bottles did not have this statement on them. Both Valvoline and Cummins web sites have a copy of a press release from March 2004 indicating even longer change intervals for this series of engines.

My questions for the forum are:

1. What series engines are the ISX and ISM?

2. Does this series include our Dodge engines?

3. If heavy duty commercial engines can extend their drain intervals, why can't we consumers?

I have considered switching to synthetic oil to extend drain intervals. However, I don't want to void my warranty and become my own warranty station. My 4. 5 owners manual states that the 3,750 mile oil change interval must be followed even if synthetic oil is used.

I am an AMSOIL user and preferred customer. I use their full synthetic oil and filters in my gas vehicles.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

The recommended oil change intervals for the 04. 5 and later engines is 15,000 miles for schedule A and 7500 miles for schedule B. I don't think that 10,000 miles would be a problem if you are not towing all the time. The table in the owner's manual is a bit confusing to interpert.

Here's a excerpt from the Cummins website:

Reduced Service

The Cummins 600's cleaner combustion results in reduced sooting of lubrication oil, allowing Cummins to double the oil change intervals to 15,000 miles for schedule A and 7,500 for schedule B (towing) for all 50 states to help reduce the cost of ownership.

The Cummins 600 Turbo Diesel has a self priming fuel filter as well: this means you can easily restart the engine after routine fuel filter changes (or if you run out of fuel).

Turbo Blue Extended Drain Intervals

Klenger:

I went back and looked at the shop manual again. You are right, only the 235 HP California engine has a 3,750 mile oil change interval. I had not looked at the footnotes closely. I'll now find something else to do Memorial day morning. I am sure I could go 10,000 miles between changes given the driving I do. I'll stick to the 7,500 mile interval just the same and avoid any question if I need my warrantee.

1. The ISX is a 15-liter class 8 engine, the ISM is an 11. 0L class 7-8 engine (and sees duty in buses and motorhomes as well as trucks) .

2. Nope, the Cummins we use is the ISB, and Dodge Rams are in class 2 (2500/3500SRW) and 3 (3500DRW).
