Is anyone in here running just a VB and controller? I am eventually going to get a torque converter, but my budget will not allow. I don't tow a lot and don't hot rod all the time (probably once every other tank of gas). I am just tired of horrible shifts. It has got worse after I put 35" tires on, I had 33's before. I can slip my TC now if I turn the TST past 5-2. I have to make it lock up in OD if I am just taking it easy. I would say it stalls at 2100 rpm's for probably 4 or 5 sec. before it locks up(that is if I don't drop the throttle to make it lock up. ) But if I am getting on it hard it will lock up better. I am not looking at any particular brands, so any opinions will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Coonrod

General thoughts on TDR is to wait and do it right... meaning VB/ TC at the same time and what ever other goodies you want with it. I asked the same question a while back. If your TC is already slipping it is only going to get worse... trust me :D Mine TC was on it's last leg. If you toast it all the way you might have to replace the whole transmission. Save up a little longer and get it all at the same time.

TCS out of Canada is offering their 89h, 89, 91, etc % TC (used to supply DTT) for $500! Get a valve body for $450, and R&R the transmission for $500 at your local shop. Thats 3-4 times cheaper than ATS, more than half less than DTT and unless your at the drags your whole life, you'll live.

How tight the converter is depends on what you want to do with it. If you want a good daily driver... like to tow and hot rod around a little bit then I would go with a 89% If you are going to drag race all the time and have to power to back it up go 93% And in the middle of those two is a 91%.

I have a question related to this also. The stock 48re shifts pretty firm now. Will adding a TC and VB make it even stiffer? Mine already pops your neck back if you get on it on the 2/3 shift.
