rear end ratios?

I just purchased an extra VE pump for a spare. It is a 114 pump. Anyone know what this pump would have been on? It was supposed to be from a 92 model truck. My original pump was a 184 and the one I am running is a 205. Anyone know if there are any differences in these pumps?

The 114 is from a 89-90 no IC truck. Change out delivery valve holders and they will run fine in a later truck.

CPL 0804- 114 pump

CPL 1351- 184 pump

CPL 1579- 205 pump (mine [CPL 1579] has a 184 on it for some reason. Couldnt be the dimwit I bought it from, could it?)

Following info from Master Repair Manual Injector Pumps and Injectors Midrange Engines

CPL 1351 - 204, 205, 184 and 186. 1. 25 timing

CPL 1579 - 204, 205, 184 and 186. 1. 25 timing

rlyons, the 114 pump was timed different @ 1. 40mm

That's all I got...

That's pump plunger timing if'n it makes any difference, jeez... Can I get a RWHP or two break for positive identification of your application number? ;)

I thank you for the info and they won't give back your RWHP I will loan you some. :-laf

VE Pump timing and tools

Yes, I always set the timing with a dial gauge ... .

The spec for non I/C is 1. 50 mm and the I/C engines is 1. 25mm...

It is better to set the pump with a hair more advance than it is to have it retarded. .

Not setting the pump properly can cause poor fuel economy. Poor performance

and possible engine damage !

Timing/replacing the pump VE pump is easy once some one shows you how to do it. The manual can be a bit confusing. . You also need the proper tools as well.

I had been considering making a video on how to to replace/time the VE pump for the past few years. I had also thought I would make up tool kits as well... If enough first genners were interested I could do it in the spring...

I would have to first see what price I could get the tools for... Retail they are a bit expensive but not too bad... If I ordered enough at one time I could get the price way down on the tools... I would also have to hire a video camera man to get it to turn out good.

I personally never go on any long road trips without my pump tools and a spare pump... If you break down far far from home. The shops will really stick it to you when they replace your pump... One of the members told me that a cummins dealer hit him for 2400. 00 when his pump quit out on the road...

So speak up everyone that is interested... And I will look into the matter further... .

Seriously, does anyone on this board follow the book recommendations for timing? 15RWHP penalty for you ;) :-laf

Appreciate the offer, but I am already stocked. timing gear puller from autozone, and regular hand tools. I do need to sometime get a dial indicator, though.

I bought a cheap dial indicator adapter for the Bosch pumps online but my cheapo dial indicator doesn't fit into the thing! Do the adapters take a special dial indicator?

Well mine is timed the rough way, with it pushed up to within a flat finger between the pump and intake. It runs great and I get 21MPH on highway empty and about 20 around town empty. I got between 12 and 15 on a trip to Arizona last summer with the 5er in tow at 65 to 70 MPH so I must be close. With the new turbo upgrade I get very little smoke except when pulling hard at low speeds so I guess I am OK. I would like to get the timing checked with a gauge sometime to see where I am at but the dial indicator I have is in inches not MM so I don't know if I can convert it or not. I am hoping to run across someone close enough to me that has the know how and gauge to check it some weekend(hint-hint). :-laf

rlyons, multiply the metric dimension by . 03937 to get real American inch measurement. 1. 5mm X . 03937= . 0591"

Thank you I will check it this weekend and see what I have going on.

The adapter has a small threaded boss on 1 end to thread into the pump. The rest of the adapter is a tube about 1" OD that adapts a long stem dial indicator. I don't recall if mine has threads or a clamp to retain the indicator.
