this may be a stupid Q. . can the pump be adjusted for more performance (without) changing to larger injectors ?... or would this be a waste of time ?

Yes, you can improve your performance with pump adjustments without going to larger injectors. Eventually you will need to take that jump. I've read here that the pumps on our 1st gen's are only able to handle so much. There are some really excellent posts on the procedures to follow. I have made use of them extensively and they have been right on the money. Just do some searching for injector pump adjusting, VE pump topics, and such. Search "the archives" for 1st gen trucks. There is also some great info and pics on one of the associated web sites. Here's a couple links to start you out. .
