Developed a leak on the screw that is on the front of the pump under the small metal line running from the KSB solinoid body to the regulating body. It's not really shown on any of the literature but has a metal seal and covers a port running into the governor housing? Managed to get a wrench onto it and turned it a fraction but still leaks. Now looks like I have to pull the injection pump and wondering IF anyone knows IF I can get by with sliding it back an inch to pull the bolt and leave the injector lines attached (pulling the support brackets)? Truck ('93 D-250 with #60k) is low miles so trying to avoid pulling the pump and also wondered IF I can get by w/o timing the pump and simply lock the crankshaft and the governor shaft and still maintain timing? Just trying to make this as painless as possible. Especially after investing a day thus far trying to fix it with no solution. Thanks guys. -- email address removed --

I think that is one that has an o-ring on it. If that one is leaking the seals are probably just deteriorating. There is a plate on the back side of the pump that is probably next. You can pull the pump back but need to disconnect the lines and by the time that is done you might as well take it off and do a reseal. The 60k is not that many miles but it is 13 years old and the diesel takes a toll on the rubber. You probably should have a reseal done at a Bosch service center unless you want to tackle it yourself.

There should be timing marks on the case and pump on the outboard side about halfway down the side of the pump. Just set the marks back where they are now and it will be close. You don't need to lock the pump it will only go one one way and its easier to pull and not drop the key if its on the top of the shaft. Pull the oil filler tube and the lock nut and washer under it then find TDDC on #1 cylinder and run the key to the top side then reinstall the pump at the same spot.

Sounds good, I'll try a new serpatine belt(old belt just slipped) and try to jack over engine with alternator bolt and get key way at top. Reseal sounds good! When one seal goes that tells me something! I'm not stupid, just hard at learning. Thanks Bob :) :)

Leaking the same...

 I first had the same leak start in the early winter of 2003. Tightened the same bolt a little with small center punch. It stopped, until I changed the fuel filter 2500 miles ago. It has started againg. I wrote a similar post, I had an array of replies, (great job 1st Gen folks!). One went like this: "I've had the same leak for about 2-years now, it's messy but the truck keeps on running. " So, here is my 'Jeg-leg' mechanic fix. I have tied a 4"X8" piece of chamois around that thin line that runs in that area, and knot it together, then I have a larger piece of chamois tucked in where the trans-cooler lines are fastened on the left side of the oil pan. No mess, just change them periodically>when wet. Quote, "If you have chamois soaking up your diesel injection pump leaks- you might me a Mexican-American Red Neck! :-laf

Geez, Patrick-(man, I was looking for just the right thread to share that information  )

That leak is at the governor shaft/lock nut. You can get the seal kit for 15. 00 and replace most every seal yourself except the head o ring, whick I have never seen nor heard of leaking. This is a good time to go through the pump's top as it contains several o rings as well as the items to replace when worn as well as pump mod/performance upgrades.

PM me if your interested in some tricks of the trade or wish to have me performance mod and or perform preventative maint. to your pump.

I'm not anticapating doing any other mods so is there any mods to the Injection Pump you'd reconmend? What kind of turn-around time do you have? Thinking mostly getting it back onto the road and wouldn't mind picking up some horse power. Mostly a tow vehicle for a 24' plywood/epoxy boat we built that goes #4000 as a total tow package. Thanks Bob :)

The work takes me a couple evenings to do, then shipping to and fro... ...

I'd install the gov spring and perform some minor pump adjustments to suit your needs. It would really wake up the truck. The o rings would need replaced. The throttle shaft and bushing may need replaced as well as the commonly worn breakover spring. I don't have any parts here at the moment.

You can perform the work yourself if you take your time and keep things orderly and clean. Take lots of notes and copy pics from the bosch manual and this site. That's how I got started. The nervous factor is a tad high the first time through. Do your research first and prepare ahead of time.

You can recon the pump's top for about 150. 00 yourself.

Pretty serious leak and pulling pump. Diamond Diesel here in the Bay Area, san Francisco, want $400 for a 'reseal' and $800 for a rebuilt pump. Luckily Greenleaf has come to the rescue of this 'newbie' and is rebuilding it with some mods. Also heard from seller today and looking like I might get the 'title' sooner than later. Can't hardly believe I handed over $7200 and didn't walk away with the title. Sometimes I'm down right dumb. Thanks everyone. Bob ('93 D-250, stock with #60k miles, Getrag trany and just figured out a 3. 56 rearend, the seller said it was a 4. 10, yeah!) :) :) :)

You never told me where your from........

Bob, You havn't happened to come across a RED and WHITE Ford Grand Torrino with two cops ride'n around in the Bay area have you?

RLanham -

Yer doing the right thing by pulling the pump and having it 'gone thru'. We had the same problem a few months back and came to the same conclusions. Neither of us had ever pulled a pump so we got to learn a few things and then took it to a place in Denver to have it r&r'd. Back in and no leaks. That little o-ring can be a real bugger - once it goes, it's gone.

Not too many of the old cars on the road in the Bay Area anymore. Smog laws are just too tough. Nope haven't seen it. Having a ******* of a time getting that pump off and I'll be making a 'S' type wrench to get the lower mounting nut off. Will get it into the mail to you Monday. Thanks Bob.

Bob, I have a pump wrench if you can't get it loose. The problem is I'm still on the road trip I told you about. I'll be home by this weekend if you need it. I'll also need to know your schedule for this weekend so I can bring down the other stuff we discussed.

Hey Greenleaf, I think they retired quite a while ago!! :-laf

Thanks for offer on wrench. Finally got around to digging out my cutting torch/rosebud and bent up a 13mm wrench. All the lip flapping I did trying to borrow one or buy one thru Snap-on dealer took longer. If in doubt innovate. Haven't got a clue on weekend, 19-20 Mar. , but good chance available. When I get close I'll email later in the week. I should pull that 100-g tank? I'll have the injectors back from Diamond Diesel and installed by then? Thanks Bob :)

Injection pump off via UPS and your hands Thur. . Thanks. Had the injectors popped and they're ok, just a little low. I'll have them back in the next several days and hopefully this used and abused 1st Generation back on the road. :) :) :) . Thanks. Bob

OK so I read this thread and decided to take a look at the pump on my RV and sure enough it has a leak at the rear of the pump. it seems to come down between the mounting bracket and the rear plate of the pump, hard to ID source, but when the engine is running, it drips off the bottom of the bracket. What seals or gaskets are in the rear of the pump? I have read the other posts and it sounds like the pump should come off but is there a another option for the rear leaks? (I'm Irish so maybe some luck today) Thanks any replies.
