Politically incorrect TDR 10 year survey

Hello all,

My wife is looking for a new minivan. Yeah, I know. But it's hers. One of the dealerships we are poking around is an independent and has a bunch of Hondas but they are all built in Canada. They are very willing to talk where the Honda dealer is not.

They are all brand new but apparently have to be sold as used. Dealer states that Honda USA and Honda Canada are run differently and will not honor each others warranty. Dealer offers 3/45,000 warranty on the van while Honda USA offers 3/36.

Dealer says only difference in vans is the odometer is in Kilometers and they change it to MPH.

The long and short of it is: Is this a good deal? What about emissions, safety etc? Has anybody dealt with this issue before? I don't recall seeing it on the board before.

I appreciate any feedback

Steve

You might want to run a Google search on something like "Honda Canada gray market vehicles". This is a hot topic among most of the manufacturers right now. I'm not sure that the Canadian market vehicles are NHTSA, EPA, etc. certified... ... Caveat emptor!

Go to your local Dodge dealer and ask them to clarify the warranty on a Canadian chrysler product registered to a U. S. resident... ... ... NONE!

What the seller told you was almost right. Many car (and other products) companies are set up as seperate divisions. Manufacturing buys raw materials and turns it into product. Distribution buys products from manufacturer and sells to dealers. Dealers buys from distribution and sells to end user. Every time the product changes hands the price goes up. Warranty is the burden of Distribution, not the manufaturer, so if the distributor is going to pay for warranty then they can refuse coverage on a vehicle the NEVER OWNED and therefore made no money on. This system explains why there are such things as "domestic imports" , big three brand cars made by other manufacturers.
