Have seen this subject brought up before, but have been unable to find answer. I can get a little heat running inside air only, but if I switch to defrost, or heat to my feet, the air is not hot. I believe the problem is in the blend door but how do you get to it, and is it cable controlled or vacuum controlled? Living in south Texas it doesn't get real cold but running at night with the temps in the 30's is really not real pleasant. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
 
How's your coolant temp when the heat isn't working?

If you can get heat in Recirc the vacuum powered blend door isn't the problem.

Could be your heater core is plugged with leafs or dirt and only flowing air though a portion of it.

How could leafs and dirt get in the heater core? I thought engine coolent ran through it. If leafs and dirt are in it, how do I clear it?
 
The dirt plugs up the fins like bugs do the radiator and there is no air getting through. I saw one that was a solid mud ball from running in the fields with the AC sucking air from outside instead of having the selector on "Recirc"
 
On our Rams it's quite involved to get at the heater and A/C coils to clean them, like an 8 hour job taking the dash apart. Dirt caked in the coils will stay wet and cause corrosion till you get a leak. Best bet is to buy a clean cab filter from Geno's to prevent it from happening. The filter installs easily on the air intake in-between the windshield and hood.



A GMC at work was clogged with leafs solid, it was so bad that if you hit a bump with the fan on high they would blow out the vents. Getting at the coil was just as bad as our trucks. Tried back blowing it with a compressor but it wasn't enough. My alternative was to close all the vents but one and hook it up to a 150 mph leaf blower. It was quite a deal to watch all the leafs shooting straight up in front of the windshield, had to clear the louvers several times. By no means did it clean the coil completely but no one is complaining about the heater not working any more.

What was the boost gauge psi when you hooked up the leaf blower?, lol

If your temp gauge barely registers it is probably the thermostat. The rubber piece on it comes off and holds the t-stat open.
