Hey,,looking at an 06 with 41750 miles and 4713 hours for 8.8 MPH! Truck is clean, and no run away issues (blow by, turbo oil line leaks, hard start) but this extremely low MPH number worries me....but then again it's an 8 yr old Cummins with only 41,750 miles and it's only $22.5..... Opinions????

Some one must have done a lot of idling for whatever reason, or posibly the instrument cluster was changed out for some reason. BTW, welcome to the club !!

Cluster been replaced? ECU been replaced? Any data on its service records? Any data on the PO and usage?

You could have a dealer scan the ECU and see if its numbers match the cluster.

45 mph average with those hours would be 212,085 miles! A 30 mph average would be 141,390 miles. I'd try to talk them down on price with the knowledge you have.

I had an hour meter on my 99. Mostly freeway delivering RV's but some idling time also. Averaged out to 42 miles per hour of engine time

Basically I walked on the deal, that much idling was just too much, looked at it like a lottery, could have been a great deal, could have been a dog. At the very least I would have had to test injectors and look at cylinders.....the search for my 3rd Cummins continues.....

Just a 2WD low miles (<80K) 5.9 truck, quad cab, either transmission..to hang on to till over 240K, like my last two (99, 03) and I ain't working anymore so the miles won't be 30K/yr like they used to be....

The 5.9L is essentially a 10,000-hour motor given an MTBO of 350,000-miles.

When I bought mine the average mph was 47. I figured that guy only stopped for diesel and cigarets. Made buying it an easy choice as others were scared off by migh miles on a three year old truck . . and didn't want the package of 2WD, man trans and longbed. Exactly what I wanted, and depreciation over six years of ownership was $3k versus what I paid.

I, too, would reject anything in the low 20's. Best fuel mileage average will be from 27-mph and up, and IMO that correlates with "proper" use.

Good luck.

I can think of plenty of other reasons not to buy a used truck. If the engine runs OK and idles smoothly, buy it and don't worry about it.
