I just recently returned from a trip towing our 25' triaxle flatbed trailer. For half of the trip I was 20,000lbs GVW and the other half 27,000lbs GVW. The last time I did the same trip/load I was one gear lower on the same hills. I was nowhere close to having to downshift again. I never dropped below 2000rpm. The addition of the HE351, ATS ex manifold, 4" exhaust, and Free spin are the major changes since last year. I am very pleased one gear higher and better fuel milage. Almost too good to be true. I was running the perf at 80 on the POD. It is so sweet to have that added power on tap. My egt never exceeded 1150F. I have the 5. 10 Jr program from last fall.

Thanks to all those who gave their advice or answered my questions. The TDR is a tremendous resource that lets me get the most from my truck.

Thanks again Carl for finding the turbo for me. It was the perfect addition for the JR. Just last night I towed my 16ft stock trailer 150miles my milage was the highest that I have seen on that trip. My overhead read 16. 9 when I got home. It is usually low when comparing it to our imperial mpg up here. There is a few good hills to climb too which makes it even better. When I had the poorer milage I had some vibration issues with some tires on the truck and trailer. Some counteract balance beads in my front drivers tire (where my wheel bearing went) and cleaned the mud and ice out of the rest of the tires. One new tire on the trailer helped too.

Carl have you ever tried balance masters, centrematics, or counteract balance beads? They claim reduced tire wear and more mpg. After my experience with things out of balance and now better I am one to believe there is some truth in it. On my trailer where the tire was bad the bearing assembly was quite loose ( new axle) compared to the other side.

i have never tried balance masters or beads. i just wash the mud off and no problems but i will check with you in a few months to see if you tried one and how you like it

Milage numbers: With all of my trucks that I have had I have milage in the 14-16mpg when pulling a trailer (hand calc). That is imperial miles/gal (4. 54L/gal). Also take into consideration winter diesel and travelling on gravel roads (higher rolling resistance boost will be 20psi instead of say 12-15psi) for a portion of my trips. When towing my large load I averaged 14. 5 impg or 12. 6 USmpg. I try to drive 65 and not pass anyone unless necessary. I accelerate moderately too. Like CKelley has told me 4. 10 gears would give me better milage when towing in 6th.

I have tried balance beads before with good results. This truck had tires on it when I bought it and must have lost a weight off my front drivers tire. I try to keep mud and ice out of my tires too. Losing that weght would be hard on wheel bearings. My bearing on that tire (with free spin) would get warm before the balance beads. Our roads, gravel and paved up here are quite rough (no interstate by any means) so having a small vibration is hard to feel. I enjoy driving my truck but don't put on many miles.

I don't see why I would need any more power. More fuel efficiency I could always use. Pay attention to the details, record your milage, and it will improve. Just listen to Kevin Rutherford on his show on the sirius trucking channel.
