Enough Truck?

Risk of buying used from private party you do not know personally.

I never ceased to be amazed at what is out there when you really start looking. I bought this rig yesterday. First FL Toter/Hauler I have seen with A Detroit Diesel. It has a Series 50 DD(which is essentially a Series 60 with two cyl. sawed off... ... ..... making it an 8. 2 litre 4 Banger!) Pistons must be as big as syrup buckets! Rated at 320 HP @ 2100 and 1150 lbs of torque. I thought it would have an MD 3060 Allison but instead it has the big 4060... ... ... I was amazed.

Truck runs and drives like a dream boat. Pulled a race car trailer for 9 years and only has 112,000 original miles. Never in commercial service. I normally don't buy rigs like this, and while I have no idea of what its' worth, I'm sure its worth more than what I paid for it... ... ... ... ... . time will tell.

Barry, I own a few Freightliner FL 106s and they have the Series 50 Detroit Diesel motors. I really have to say that they are very smooth motors. They offer better mpg than our other big inline 6 motors that are rated comparably.
They just sound a little different.

How many miles are they good for?

Many 60 series can hit 1,000,000 with a bearing roll performed at 500,000 miles. The 50 series share many attributes so I would expect a half million with any luck at all.

I have a customer with a 50 series in a tandem dump truck and it has performed very well over the years.

Be aware that you may encounter a 40 series in your travels, those are a re-badged DT-466. When you look one of those up in Detroit Diesel the part numbers come up in the Navistar format... . go figure... ...

Some fire trucks have the 40 series, don't know what other applications got them.

Mike.

That must be a 106 as well, see the spacers under the front fenders. Everything sets a little higher to accomodate the bigger radiator and taller engine.....

That truck must be a class 8... I predict a 3 axle, KT600 w/13spd next... . :D

Ours have around 500,000. Each was purchased with 150,000-200,000 miles on the odometer. Our trucks only put 25,000 miles/yr on them, but they run 5 days per week, 8-10 hours per day. Oh, and when an injector goes bad, the whole cab shakes!! That dead cylinder really shakes things up on a 4 popper!!

I was under the impression that the "106" in FL106 stood for 106 inches from bumper to back of cab. (BBC)
The snout was shorter due to a shorter (front to back) engine.

Yes, I have seen the series 40 AKA DT466 in mechanical and electronic forms. I think even Perkins had a version.
Mike, I think you meant a 50 in a fire app. I know the 50 is (was) a Seagrave favorite. Almost all local NYC Transit (MTA) buses have the series 50 chugging them along! There has to be thousands of 'em. There's no mistaking the sound. The DSNY tried the series 50 when the search was on to find a replacment for the DDEC 6-71 which was going out. The Cummins L10, then M11 won out. For a while.

Barry, That's a REAL NICE rig! One question. Is it registered as an RV? Make sure you use the proper trans fluid (transynd) in that 4060.

No, I tangled with a 40 series years ago in some little fire truck. Wierd.....

Mobil Product Code for Transynd Gallons is 98KH08. Cheaper than Allison and is the ONLY other approved fluid.
