I'm curious as to the new turbo on the 6. 7 liter Gen 4 engines. Cummins' press release indicates that the new VG Turbo essentially doubles as an exhaust brake, providing more retarding power than even current model Jakes. I believe the sliding vane inside these units is electrically controlled by the ecm and I wonder if that control capability exists in late model (2006) 5. 9's.



If not, I wonder if it couldn't be manually controlled by a switch and a rheostat. No voltage to the control and it stays open, operating like a traditional turbo. 12 volts and it's closed, max boost all the time. Values in between modulate the unit. In any case, if that turbo could be retrofitted to the Gen 3 5. 9, you should be able to enjoy both higher max air flow and more power, better response (boost at & immediately off-idle) and engine retarding without having to mess with a Jake or other exhaust brake. The best of all worlds without having the egr, retarded timing and the rest of the emissions garbage found on the '07's. Any genius out there that might know something about this? Actually, it should also decrease emissions because of the higher flow... Better deal all around!! I think I'd prefer one of those turbos to any of the other after market units available.
