A while back I posted that after I tabbed my KDP I noticed a rubbing sound that wasn't there before. I believe my vibration dampner is rubbing very slightly against the timing case. I know there is a rubber 'bumper' on the back of the dampner, but should it actually be making contact with the timing case? Can the dampner be shimmed with washers to prevent this?

Thanks,

-john

Could it be rubbing on the crank position sensor? If so it's in slots just loosen and slide back a little. That's way easy to do if it's the situation.

No, I've checked and double-checked the CPS. I think it has a . 049" clearance, which is within spec. Now I don't know how much wobble the dampner might have in it, but there are no signs on the dampner surface the the CPS is rubbing.

I suppose it's possible you've got some sort of crud behind the dampner that would make it wobble but that would be easy to see at idle. You've got me

Anybody else have any thoughts on this? Is shimming the dampener an option or will that cause problems?

Thanks,

-john

I would take the damper off and look for the indicator marks on the damper, then go to the corasonding spot on cover , most liky is that it didn't go back together just the same, but I would not shim it , find the problum insted of covering it up , if you start changing things you may need to then change the CPS ajustment , and whats next.

The dampener doesn't have any indicator marks on it does it? I didn't think it mattered how it went on. Are you sure about it has a correct position?

Thanks,

-john

I found some threads that talk about vibration dampers wearing out. I haven't pulled mine off yet, but looking up at it from underneath I can see the rubber protruding about 1/8". Does that sound right or is mine starting to walk out?

-john

I agree with you Scott. I can get a new balancer from Cummins for $142. I talked to one of the techs at Rocky Mountain Cummins and he said the rubber should not be protruding at all. He said if mine is sticking out 1/8" it should be replaced. So I went ahead and ordered one.

I don't know about the diesels, but a gas engine, the damper has a secific way it goes on... it is keyed to ensure it is on correctly. Even on an internally balanced engine.

No key on a 5. 9

Much Better!

I got the new harmonic balancer on today. The old one was definitely ready to be retired. The inner/outer sections hadn't slipped yet, but the rubber was definitely coming out.
