I think an HX-40 can be barked forever as long as it stays at less than 38PSI, and a '35 if it does not go over 35PSI.



I have a friend who barked his Ball Bearing garret all day every day,, he said it sounded better than turbo whine. :confused:

35psi or 65psi, your still flexing the impeller wheel and the shaft. Somthing sooner or later is bound to give. All that extra pressure has to go somewhere and the turbo is the weak link (see image below of an HX-50). I have first hand experience, I snapped the turbo shaft on a C-15 Cat at about 25psi going up a hill when I shifted fast, and filled the intercooler with aluminum chunkies. And the turbo on a 14. 6 liter engine is way bigger than a hx40. I'm trying real hard not to repeat this on the new twin turbo Acert version, I'd hate to buy 2 this time. :-laf

My thoughts on this, turbo bark is actually the noise made when there is no longer enough exhaust drive pressure to keep the compressor side turning. And now all that boost that you have made (compressed) in the intake has now switched directions and is coming back out of the intake (intercooler) because the engine can no longer use that much air. And thus for a split moment the turbo can actually be turning the oppisite direction, or cause a sudden stop in the turbo causing the shaft to snap. So I would say that is not a good thing for any turbo, sure there might be some turbos with large shafts that can handle a bark more than others but I wouldn't recommend barking you turbo because it sounds cool. And yeah I like that sound because it reminds me of a good running pulling tractor when it hit the end of the track.

OK, but how do you stop the barking permanently?



Is the barking primarily from having too large a turbo for the gasses flow?



Can you put in a smaller compressor wheel relative to the turbine wheel and it not be as susceptable to bark?, ie less pressure in the compressor end.



Does the BD BOV prevent the bark?, and how?

It opens when you let off the pedal to release the boost pressure. Which prevents the bark which also keeps the impeller spinning at high speed to eliminate the lag between shifts.



Gassers use them all the time, but BD is the only place that makes one for diesels. (hks used to but it's not available anymore from what I understand) They took a standard BOV and made it trip electronically (with the TPS) since there isn't any vacuum on a diesel to activate it. Most don't need it unless you really try to bark it. Larger chargers are a lot harder to keep from barking due to the higher pressures and just larger mass to stop.
 
I think it's the wastegate blowing off the pressure. Mine has done that a couple of times when I was backing a trailer in 4 high and only had traction on the front wheels. I'd accidentally done it a few times with my 02 also. Not something I'd make a habit of doing but nevertheless, I think the motor is doing it's job.
