My compliments to the gentlemen that did the videos. VERY detailed! My thanks for him taking the time to do this! Oo.

These videos were done by Brandon (Crossy)? AKA Crossy' Son a 16 to 18 year old. His age and knowledge speaks well of the furture of our 1st Gens. He is a regular poster on the DTR which has some excellant "how to's" in their FAQ section.

Yes these videos are great. I just did my spring and fuel pin today, and i honestly wouldn't have done it if I hadn't watched the videos. I was pretty intimidated but everything went perfectly. Definitely tip my hat, well done Brandon!

Ditto! The VP internals is something I have always avoided as there is not a lot of good info like the P pumps have. This changes things. :D

Can we make this a sticky or move it tonthe FAQ so we dont lose the thread into the thread boneyard? Thanks. :)

Nice videos. But my 01. 5 160HO automatic has a round fuel pin, no offset. Turning it does nothing. Spring, smoke screw and such do work and help. Haven't retimed it yet because I didn't have the s wrench. Will check HF for that next time I'm in. Had to make special tools to be able to adjust smoke screw and idle speed screw, but sure is worth the effort. Next trick will be to swap the larger exhaust from a 96 onto the truck to lower EGT. That should do it as I don't want to grenade the transmission and there's limit to what the non lock will take. Trans temp does rise dramatically when maneuvering a trailer at low speeds or when towing my 9T gooseneck at full throttle at highway speeds.

S wrench appears to come only in a set. http://www.harborfreight.com/5-piece-metric-s-type-wrench-set-99699.html

tampering with ve pumps

For years I have read countless posts about how to screw up ve pumps.

I have been told by several know it alls that we engineers did not know how to get power out of the engines... Among other stupid comments along those lines. . Well here's a news flash for all those who think that they know more about automotive engineering than we did. We started with a 325 hp engine

in the first prototype truck we built. It took us 5 years to figure out how to keep the engine from blowing the rest of the truck apart . We finally decided on 160 hp. . The pumps were set to apply the power at a rate that would not rip the planetary gears out or twist off the axles ect. All you accomplish is ruining your fuel economy when you take a stock ve pump and start screwing with it . You are also doing the slow kill to the rest of your drive line.

Improperly adjusting pump timing is a great way of damaging your engine.

There was a reason for using a dial indicator ! Too much advance raises cylinder pressure . Often to the point of blowing head gaskets. Too rich a fuel mixture leads to high exhaust temps resulting in blow off ring lands and or holes in pistons ect. It is also a violation of FEDERAL LAW to tamper with the injection pump !

In conclusion: We worked hard to build the trucks to do a job and stay together. We wanted them to get reasonable fuel mileage and be within epa guidelines . If the truck does not have enough power to move your load. Don't turn up the power. GET A BIGGER TRUCK ! There are companies like

Freightliner, Peterbilt,Mack ect that make trucks to haul heavier loads.

Set the pump to STOCK spec's then leave it alone. It will last longer and get better fuel mileage ! At $4. 00 + a gal for fuel who wants to wast it. ??

Thanks for the thoughts on the subject!

Question on this comment. Was was changed on this truck? Was it all fuel related, bore/stroke, boost, was it something other than a VE pump?

Just curious. This is the type of info i don't want to be lost with time as the engineers from this day are getting older and some of these stories are untold. :(

Thanks!
