I'm new to TDR, but have a 1998 1/2 Dodge 2500 Quad Cab with 12V Cummins. Would like to up the power a bit, but not sure of engine VIN if it's a VIN6 or VIND. How can I tell what I have???

RC,

Not sure why you need to know the vin number to increase power. But if you look down by the oil filler spout, on the front/top cover of the gear housing and copy down the info there. The info located there is all that you will need to get started.

If you need more help, just post or use the search engine.

Thanks, Crabman. I'm looking at a Hypertech programmer and they ask if the engine is a VIN6 or VIND. Not sure which is which or what I have. Think I have one of the last 1998 rigs with a 12 valve engine in a Quad-cab.

RC,

First of all, I forgot to welcome you to the TDR. So, WELCOME!! There is a wealth of info here and some very highly knowledgeable people who will share some of their knowledge.

You do not have to use a "box" to make power.

I would suggest that you buy and install gauges first. EGT, Boost & F/P.

1. Gauges

2. TST Plate #10

3. 3K rpm GSK

4. Larger air filter

5. 4" exhaust

The above items (#2, 3, & 4) will make a HUGE difference in power for the $$ invested. {app. $600}

If it has a catalytic converter, replace with a "catalytic converter test pipe".

Is it a stick or auto?

Thanks for the tips, Crabman. Been off of PC for awhile, hard disk crash. I guess I'm really not after stump pulling power here. Just a little more torque. I have the auto transmission, the truck is a 2500 4x4. So far, I've used it to tow 10,000 pounds up on top of the mountain I live on here. Does pretty well, but I've read about the programmers and they seemed like an easy way to maybe improve shift points and overall power. The other method I've had described is to install a new "brain" completely. I don't want to sacrifice milage these days. Truck has 75,000 miles on it so it's really just about broken in good. And thanks for the welcome to the site.

If you have the 12 valve it is not electronicaly controlled, programer is not for you, just old fashioned adjustments and hard parts

RChesney,

I think what you are asking is how to tell if your '98 is a 12v or 24v from looking at the vin number? If thats the case, if the 8th digit in the vin is a "D", then you have a 12-valve. However, if the 8th digit in the vin number is a "6", then you have a 24-valve. (You probably already know, but the vin number is located on the drivers side front corner of the dash. ) Hope that helps.
