I've always said two heads are better than one. So let me put this one to all my good friends in TDR. I converted my 96 three quarter ton to duallys using a chassis cab DANA 80 and the one ton springs. I also converted to five speed from auto. Needless to say the drive shafts had to be modified. / Having said that, everything is fine when not towing. No rumbles and no shaking or rattling. Now when I hitch up to my fifth wheel (14,000 lbs) I get the following; Take off in first, shift to second and all is well, but when I shift to third i get this jerking back and forth like the differential is torquing back and forth. If I shower down on the power it quits and I am able to get above it and all is fine in fourth and fifth gears. I kind of suspect weak psrings and the differential is torquing. What do you all think?

96, 3/4 ton 230 HP, converted to 1 ton.

Many times the problem you describe is caused by weak or a broken throttle springs. DC has a TSB for this but their fix is a rip-off, over $100 and all you really get are stronger springs.

Jim,

Check the side of the pump for 2 springs. They sit side to side of one another. If you simply get a throttle return spring & add it across them, walla ... fixed.

I did the TSB, which is a whole new linkage setup. The problem is coming back.

Thanks Forrest, I took a look this morning and the throttle spring is missing. Ordered one from DC for $1. 42. Thanks again. You know how it goes when the truck starts acting up we always jump to conclusiins and forget to look at the small things first.

Just proves, two heads are better than one!;)

What modifications are done to the engine if any, I have had this problem for years and have tried everything mentioned above and MUCH MUCH more and have not found a cure to date. My truck does exactly the same thing.

I have a 96 3/4 ton that I have been messing with for ever it seems. I converted from automatic to 5 speed and that is where the problem came from. The automatic has a kick down cable that runs from the fuel pump accelerator bell crank to the transmission. When I installed the standard shift this was removed and in its place you have to install a spring. In the Dodge parts computer it is item #16. It has a clip on one end and a hook on the other. $1. 42. I had all kinds of thoughts about everything from broken frame to weak springs. Then Forrest (TDR Member) came up with the answer. I sure love this forrum. These guys have all the answers. If this fixes it give Forrest a thank you.

Well I replaced the throttle return spring and it still bucks in third gear. Ordered the torsion spring. My service manual shows one torsion spring for the 96 model. Does the 97 have two? If so that may have been an ongoing problem and they changed it for the 97. Does onyone that has a 97 have similar problems?

Jim

Dodge did NOT have a clue what springs I was talking about. I took the parts guy out & showed him the 2, side by side, springs & he never found a diagram.

I can believe that. Most of those guys have great computer skills but couldn't pour sand out of a boot with the directioins on the heel. At any rate I have a new torsion spring ordered so I'll keep you posted. thanks!
