Don't know if this is normal or not. My engine violently shakes and rattles to a stop when shutting down. I have been letting the turbo cool down about 2 minutes under light use, longer this weekend when towing. My 89 Ford 7. 3 didn't do this and my son says his Detroit 60 in his Freightliner dosen't either.

I hate to take it in to the dealer if this is normal, its 50 miles one way. Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

My 06 does this also. I don't recall my 98 or 02 doing it, but is seems the motor kind of "jumps" or something when I shut it off.

you both have the g56 trans. which has a dual mass flywheel that is what you are hearing when shutting down. i have found that it is less when you depress the clutch when shutting down. but that is completely normal for the g56.

It's normal for the engine to shake when you shut it down. On my 1st gen the entire truck shakes upon shutdown. ;) In my '05 I've got a 6 speed also. When I shut down I first put it in gear (usually 1st, but it doesn't matter what gear) and shut it down. Then I take my foot off the clutch and leave it in gear. This eliminates all of the rattle from the clutch and trans and is most likely easier on parts as well. :D

every cummins i have had and all my buddies have had and all i have heard shut down sound like this. not so much the 3rd gens as loud, but still do

I see one thing in common with those of you who have the shake/rattle. It would seem you're all driving p/u's equipped with an inline 6 cylinder diesel engine.

Next to the occassional "accidental" coal pouring out the tailpipe, that shake/rattle is the coolest thing about my truck. :D

I remember the guy from SBC (sorry, don't remember his name) posting that once as well. He said it's a good idea. I never thought about it before, but I do it most of the time just outta habit. Hard to get a "run-away" doing that as well.

I just hit the parking brake, get out, arm the alarm, and let the turbo timer shut the truck down...

And people probably think thats weird when you leave your truck, lock it, and shortly after it shuts off by itself with no one around. :-laf

Im with Cattletrkr I love it! I hate to turn it off, but I love to listen to it and feel it turn off! :p most every inline engine does this (event gas engines)

I've had a few people catch up to me when I was walking away and tell me that my truck just shut off :-laf . I just let them know it's on a timer so the twin turbo's can cool down.

Most med-heavy duty diesels do this and the inline configuration engines are the worst in this regard. DT466Es and MBE906 engines as well as the larger MBE4000 series and Detroit series 60 engines rattle a whole bus when shut down. Its the nature of the balance becoming off when the injection events shut down.
