Gents:
this is intermittent issue, when coming out of curve with reasonable speed say, 30-40 mph and straightening out, I almost loose steering: wheels puling one way, small correction with steering wheel makes wheels turn more than usual ( rapidly), correcting it sends wheels in other direction rapidly, it is driving like in zig-zag. Then after some time say about mile or so everything goes back to normal.
I have replaced leaky steering box, worn ball joints, steering rods. Steering box firmly attached to frame, inspected frame, no cracks, turned wheels left and right while stationary, nothing unusual, front bearings OK ( wheel turns normal when lifted of ground).
Truck is 4x4 250 about 230 000 miles
thanks for clues

Your joint on your column is bad go get a Borgenson or flaming river shaft and problem is fixed also go get the steering box brace from dodge connection to eliminate that flex as well

I agree with Donovan on the with shaft. But if you double check and can't find any slack in the wheel with the engine off, I could be in the hydraulics. Just thinking out loud, a sticky bypass valve in the pump causing over pressure or something in the steering box. I have never been into either of these, so just speculating...

Check the U joints by the hubs. Had a set that was really stiff not loose just stiff would bind and cause the steering linkage to load up when the U Joints would finally allow movement things would jump and move too far. you'd end up over compensating. The truck was un-drive able. I had a set of binding MOOG Ball joints on my 05 that would do the same thing.

Power runs out steering

I have a similer problem ,however at high speeds during avoidance menovers. Its as thowI am out running the P/S pump.
When driving on dirt roads @50-60mph (or hitting black ice ) and the back steps out 2' you simply wip the wheel in the direction of the skid (moving the front over infront of the rear that is trying to pass. (Hafe way 1/4turn steering wheel movement of 1/2) it will luse power assist, from there its power stearing by Arm Strong. Step 2 quickly turn back to aline the front tires with the direction of travle. (Agen the movement is finshed with P/S by AS .) Step 3 slowly adjust the front to adjust the change of direction of travel to stay on the road . Wile fethering the throttle to match rear tire speed to road speed(65ish mph so about 850=35mph-1600rpm=65) this all takes place in about 50' or less.(.25sec) this haplens about 5 times a winter (snow /ice)and 2-10 times in tbe summer(high speed dirt)

I have had extend conversations:-{} with: Cummins, Red Head, Genos, Borgeson steering shaft, napa many mechanics. None know the sorce of the problem... . The only parts left on my D250 to change on the front are the box 1 tierod end and lower CA bushings. Rear springs /bushings needed.
The best gess /consciences is that 1 when I checkup on the throttle the rpms drop and the pump has insufficient flow to keep up with my steering rate and 2 the pressure releaf spring is week(should be celebrated to aprox. 1600psig) and when high demand is placed on it ,it wets the bed, reverting to a manual steering box.
