New Ricer technique!!!!

I need to get a virus scan (i. e Norton's virus scan), but I was wondering what is one of the better ones out there. I guy at work told me that PC-cilin was a good one. Has anyone heard of it? Any others out there? I believe that I may have waited to long to get one though. Anybody heard of a worm attacking microsoft XP? TIA

Eric

Yup, just cleaned the latest PITA virus off my XP 'puter this morning.

I'm using McAffee and it didn't catch it.

Microsoft has a patch and a 'cleaner' to deal with the latest nasty bug brought to you by Kids with no respect for others, no disipline, and too much free time on their hands.

Some may not like it, but I have always used Norton AV. I've never had a virus go far enough to do any damage while using NAV. . I haven't particularly cared for the Auto-protect option in any brand of AV due to it's system usage. Running cad programs require as much system resources it can get its hands on. just my . 02

BTW, if you have NAV, it has an option for installing thinking you have a virus/worm and installs a special way to take care of the virus/worm while installing. I'm sure others have this too, I'd suggest using that option.

I've been running a free virus software from AVG(www.grisoft.com).

In 3½ years I've never had a single virus on my machine. It has caught several viruses I have received via e-mail and took care of them before they could do any damage.

Someone from these forums turned me on the company but I can't for the life of me remember who.

 IF i ever catch one of the SOB, catching a virus will be the least of there worries. &^%#^&&*&**&(&

I just go the latest one, but I have fixed it, with no damage. ???

Now, I feel a little better, sorry I had to just vent a little.

When I got home from work the wife had already done the patch from Microsoft and installed Norton's. You would think that people would have better things to do with their time than screw with other peoples things. For now it seems to be fixed.

Any of them is better than none. Just make sure you keep it updated. No virus scanner will catch everything, but if it is up-to-date your chances are much better. You also need to keep your Windows updated.

A couple of years ago, we reevaluated our virus protection at work. We were using Norton, but our experience with Norton is that it doesn't always clean the viruses even though it says it does. It was also very time consuming for us to keep over 600 PCs and 20 servers updated.

We selected Sophos, primarily because it is so easy to update. Since we switched, we haven't had any major virus infections. I even use it on the 5 PCs and 2 servers at home. It took me 15 minutes to update them all last night, and I didn't even leave my desk. :D

If you're using Norton, just verify that it actually removed the viruses it says it did.

Ahh, but let us not forget that it is Billy Gates that makes viruses, worms, trojans, et al, possible. The push to production and profit is frought with perils, eh Mr. Gates?

Just got rid of that one myself. Downloaded the patch and updated the antivirus software. Thats the key. UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE.

Whatever happened to bored people just looking at porn on the net? Now bored people find ways to mess up other people who are trying to look at porn. LOL

I use Norton Internet Security virus protection and firewall in one program. Never had a problem, conflict or virus get through. I highly recommend it.

My company uses Symantec's Anti-Virus product. They give it to the employees to use on their home computers for free. I've been using it for 6 or 7 years now and think it's one of the best virus scanners around. Make sure you configure your virus software to retrieve updates regularly. My pc's check for updates daily and do complete scans of all files every Sunday morning. In the many years I've been using computers I've never been infected. I also recommend regular visits to Microsoft's update website for security patches. The recent blaster worm was fixed by a patch released the middle of July!

One thing a lot of folks don't understand is that virus software is only one piece of the answer. If you really want to keep the bad boys out you'll need a good firewall program. Zone Labs has a free version available for download that does a pretty good job and the price is certainly right. I get Symantec's firewall product from my employer (free again) and it's shut down everything that tried to sneak in over the years. The free firewall programs don't come with updates to fight off new types of attacks. You get what you pay for.

Keep in mind that firewall software can get annoying when it's doing what it was designed to do. Anytime something tries to access your computer the firewall software will generate an alert and ask you for directions on how to deal with the intrusion. Not all attempts to access your computer are hostile. Once you set up a rule for all the friendly applications you use the firewall software will start to quiet down. It's a little extra work but certainly worth it.
