I have stayed away from aftermarket intakes up to this point because I didn't want a cotton filter or an open airbox. Now I'm looking at the Volant cold air intake with the Donaldson powercore filter. My question is, does it move enough more air than the stock filter to be worth fooling with? I think p/n 164596 would be correct for my 2003, but I'm not 100% sure. Here's a link to it:

I don't do hard core off roading, but my truck is used for work in the pasture, on dirt roads, and general driving around. I'm leaning toward not using the lower scoop because I'm worried it would drag over sticks and bumps, suck in seed from tall grass, maybe ingest water, and cost a lot of money. Can it be added later when I have the bigger tires? Thanks for the opinions.

So no real gain over the stock setup? I like the powercore style filter, but I guess I can live with my current setup and save some coin in the process. I would like to change the piping to the turbo... just for sound.

If you are running all the time in dirty conditions, save your money and stick with the OEM box and OEM paper filter. Your engine and wallet will be glad you did.

I believe I had this system for awhile, ended up going with the AFE Mega Cannon due to a much larger filter and intake. I do a lot of offroading and have never had any issues.

BDaugherty: I use the stock airbox and a Wix 49964 (I think that is the part number???). It is the 4" pleated OEM paper filter. I also have the "Cool Blue" tube between the airbox and turbo. I installed the Home Depot CAI that terminates at the bottom of the air dam. Interestingly enough, the only thing I have ever found in that airbox during an inspection that surprised me was a small bird. Not sure how it got there but it is a favorite story of mine to tell that I sucked a bird right out of the air! Also, have pictures to back it up. Here is something that is entirely non-scientific but interesting. I have an AiRaid OEM oiled "cotton" filter that I ran for about 6 months as an EGT test. Prior to the AiRaid was a Fleetguard OEM in there. With the Fleetguard, I could barely hear the Turbo spool up and my silicon readings during an oil sample was 5. I then Installed the AiRaid. I could hear the Turbo spool-up until it hit about 10 PSI then the whine left my hearing range. The silicon reading on this filter was 3. Now I have the Wix in there and the Turbo sound is still there (music to my ears). I have not done an oil sample with the Wix in place yet. As for the EGT tests? This was over the course of about one year and the test was meant between a factory air filter (Fleetguard) and an aftermarket low restriction (cotton). I noted my drives to work, interstate travel (with and without travel trailer) and different weather conditions. I found no "remarkable" EGT difference between paper and cotton. I baby this pickup and don't "horse" it. I tow at 17,090 lbs gross combined in camping dress. I did this test for my own gratification. There is a lot of information and opinions out there so I decided to find for myself and at the end of the day it is all about what makes me sleep better. As for the Home Depot CAI, I can no longer pull the filter minder into the yellow during my tows.
