Well I took off the BHAF (Dirty as can be) and was on E~Bay and came across RamPowerParts selling a Volant Intake ... ... . So I bid and Viola! Sheez In! It Draws air from the wiper cowl as well as the factory fender intake as well. It has a sweet Carbon Fiber cover and uses an AFE filter. Bolts up effortlessly and looks good! Yeah I wanted to run a Scotty System but then wound up with this and am happy. No idea about driving impressions 'cause the dang truck just winds up sideways no matter what gear it's in (Rain) (awww look at the Piers Turbo I think It's Smiling ;) ) #ad

Nope No Drilling ... ... . In fact Those with the Factory airbox either still on their trucks or just kickin' arround, This kit uses the FACTORY mounting nuts. I got this one for $255. 00 (Actually I have another coming from J. C Whitney but THEY have it listed as a BACKORDERED unit so I jumped the gun and got this one and will be selling the other one when it gets here)

I don't have the Aux Plumbed all the way thru (Actually right now it sits about 1"1/4 away from the firewall where you then make your hole like a scotty) I am off to the H. W store to borrow a saw and I will let you guys know as to who , what when where to drill... ... ..... If needed :D

Guys , Before I cut the hole I want to do some data research first (Record some EGT temps before and after the hole) That way we know what to do in the future for theese.

Nice looking unit

That plate on top supposed to be removed for filter service? Can you give us a pic of the filter element?

Doc

awesome

Keep us posted id like to see how it works out. I think because of the dual intake the noise wouldnt be to much louder than stock because of the much much lower volume of air drawn from the cowl. If you want someone to sell the other unit to pm me.

Volant air box

Doc, the filter installs through the top, hence the lid. The filter, made by AFE looks pretty much like the cone scotty filter, just a few inches shorter and a cool blue color.

Chip, the box comes with the rear snout open, so you don't have to cut into the cowl unless you want to. And yes, if you cut into the cowl, the intake noise is annoying, at least to me. I had a Scotty for awhile but took it off because of the noise. The Volant box is the same way if you draw air from the cowl, much to my disappointment.

Big Daddy, That is what I thought but it is still pretty noisy, but not a bad as the 1st generation Scotty. I live real close to the Volant factory and took my truck there a couple of times so they could test fit a few things prior to production. They hadn't seen a truck with the Scotty hole allready cut.

Tool Man, the size of the Scotty hole should work okay. When I was at Volant, we found a short section of hose from another kit that would slip over the rear snout of the air box that would do for connecting to the cowl. The Scotty hole in my truck is about an inch or so too far to the left, but it will still work. If you cut a Scotty sized whole about two inches to the right, put the taillight grommet in the hole, it should hook up great. The hose we used for the rear snout fits into the Scotty hole w/grommet for a nice fit.

One thing they do on some of their other systems is replace the screw on lid with a clear piece of lexan plexiglass so you can see the condition of the filter without removing the lid of the box.

Tool man, I thought that the AFE had a inverted cone at the end of the filter? Maybe this is a different series of filter. PS, How about taking a picture of the fender side inlet so I could see how big it is. I will eventually look into a filter system like this but would never drill the hole because of the noise factor. Do you think that this system would flow plenty of volume without the cowl drilled?

Hey Sam are you still comming into San Jose this month I would like to check out your Volant filter if the offer is still open.

The Inlet (For the factory Plumbing) is Perfectly sized (Possibly a tiny bit larger) and as for the Cowl plumbwork I haven't done it yet as the box is really taking in gobs of air the way it is. I will take that shot for ya tomorrow.
