My 08 c&c 4500 is producing too many volts

I have 16.50 at the alt and batteries, but the scanner reads the pcm at 13.8 to 14.5

It has done this since I bought it in January, I replaced the alt a month ago

I cleaned the body grounds (Not the engine grounds yet) thinking about replacing the battery cables anyway, Theyre falling apart at the terminals.

Is the Voltage Regulator supplied signal from the PCM? or just system voltage? Sounds like a wiring fault to the alt, but then why is the pcm only at 14. wire fault to the pcm?

I also have the headlight flicker problem, and various sensor glitches, CEL is always on. (have to clean the Turbo, too)

Any ideas would be appreciated

Our trucks charge passenger battery but sense on drivers battery. Over charge is symptom of bad crossover cable.

the battery cables …. Theyre falling apart at the terminals.

This is more then likely the CAUSE of your various problems. The condition of each and very cable and terminal connection in a dual battery system is CRUCIAL to the proper operation of that system. Furthermore, these trucks are extremely sensitive to booth high and low voltages and such conditions will cause all sorts of CEL and sensor problems.

Our trucks charge passenger battery but sense on drivers battery. Over charge is symptom of bad crossover cable.

This is correct…the XO cable between the two batteries tends to fail/cprrod UNDERNEATH the insulation jet a few inches back from the battery terminals and WILL cause overcharging problems for the reason stated.

Thanks for the replies

That makes sense. does anyone have a source for replacement cables? all that I have found are not as large as stock.

or should i make them myself, i have a crimping tool, but shouldnt the terminals be soldered?

SO... two weeks ago I replaced the crossover cable, with no results. still charging at about 16.5 volts, headlights and dash lights still flickering. decided to run it like this for the time being.

Was having a problem with the check guages light coming on almost always, dash volt meter dips south of 13, especially with a/c blower on.

also having constant P2262 turbo - mechanical - always on, cleared it and on again almost immediately at startup, multiple times, started pricing Turbo's

I had blown an aftermarket accessory fuse a few months ago, and decided to check the fuses under the hood. checking them with a voltmeter, i noticed that they only had about 13.8 volts. hmmm. recheck batteries (engine running) 16.5. Check the cable from battery to the fusebox post, 16.5. check the fusebox tab, 13.8. Holy Toledo! The bolt was tight but there was corrosion between the contact surfaces, Sanded it down, reinstalled. 14.4 at battery, 14.4 at fuses.

no more check guages light.

Took it out for a run, interstate, 77 mph (Governed) for about 6 miles. stopped and thought about it....cleared the p2262 code, started it up and no immediate engine light, hmmm. Back on the interstate, about 12 more miles, no CEL. More power than usual. switched on the exhaust brake, but no noticeable difference braking. still smoking a bit cruising not under load. Trip computer typical mileage is about 10.1, now reads 13.8, probably from getting the turbo back (was it de-valued with the P2262 code??)

Cant wait til tonight to see if the headlights dont flicker!

What difference should I hear with the EB on, not towing but carrying a decent load.
