2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Vibiation When Backing Up Truck

Yesterday driving home from work, my check gauges light came on and my volt gauge dropped for normal just over 14 volts to complete 0. It fell like a rock was tied to it. Once at zero the needle never moved again. I drove to my brothers and shut the truck of. I didn't have a volt meter there. I started the truck to drive home and all was fine. No light and the gauge read normally. This morning all was fine again. What caused the gauge to drop? Is there a sensor that reads the voltage and relays it to the PCM.

Thanks for the help.

Same ting happened to me tuesday when I was plowing, thought my belt broke,I checked it ,it was fine. Started the truck back up and the needle went to 8 volts, raced the engine a couple of times and steadily climbed to the normal 14+ .

It's been 2 days since it happened to me. Everything seems normal, I'd sure like to know what caused it though. I yesterday morning when I started the truck it seems to take the needle longer than normal to get above 14 volts, but this morning it looked about right. I wish I could have gotten a volt meter on it while the gauge said it was zero. Then I could have know if it was a PCM glitch. If it was just the alternator, then the gauge should have still read 12 volts due to the batteries. The only thing that I did notice when the gauge dropped is that my fuel pressure dropped for about a minute, then it came back and stayed. That has been normal ever since. I'll post back if I find anything out.

You may have shorted a batt and now you don't know if one is bad or not. Isolate each batt and check the voltage with a meter. Would also explain why it takes longer to restore the 14V reading after a start.
