Its amazing what can turn a fellers crank. Last July 1 myself and fellow members of our fire dept were called in the middle of the night for a water rescue as 7 people stood waist deep in water as their boat was sinking with a cracked hull, they only had 3 life jackets and the temps were in the low 40's, they were in the middle of the lake some 4 to 5 miles from any land. Fortunatly some late niters on the shore heard their cries for help and called 911. All were rescued safely although a little cold and scared. When we got to the party of 7 the only thing visible of the boat was half of the windshield. The good lord was looking after these folks that night .
Last week at the county banquit for some 200 fireman and their wives our battalion was honnered with a plaque that gave much pride to our group of volunteers ,their heroism and dedication showed to be very patriotic , nothing that would hold a candle to the 9-11 events but the bottom line is we came thru because some folks were in trouble and needed help. we were very honered to receive this prestigious award.
Well last night we had our sweethearts ball in our community hall and I became the recipient of th FIREFIGHTER OF THE YEAR, wow they caught me by total surprise ,it was so cool, I have never got a standing ovation before. I had a feeling in my heart that I have never felt ever before, I got a little tearie eyed and choked up a bit . all ended well and I made a short speach of how its always a team effort and I wanted to share the award with all my buddies . we ate prime rib had a few cool ones and danced the night away.
With this being said I can tell all of you that I personally always have gotten a hugh rush from all facets of firefighting, I was on a pedistol last night that was very high and this was so good for my sole I cant express what it ment to me, other than my commitment to help others has risen to yet another level . That is what life is about anyway to me. You never know what tomorrow may bring, myself or my family could be the ones in need.
