Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) VP-44 gurus - when was this pump made?

I was able to pick up a clean and only slightly used new VP-44 from another TDR member at a reasonable price for use as a backup - and while all the numbers on the pump indicate it is later production than the one on my '02 truck, wonder if any here have experience or knowledge in deciphering numbers on the pump, and can establish a manufacturing date?

In case the numbers on the above tag aren't clear enough, they are:

0 281 001 827 00677 089090B

And in a small oval circle at the end of that tag, the numbers 810

I'm sorta theorizing the "033" stamped on the bottom of the pad in the top photo is a month/year stamp - which might translate to March of '03?

Any help?

I'd like to keep this active for another day or two - surely Piers or some of the other aftermarket guys with intimate experience on the VP44 has a clue as to manufacturing codes on these units...

Yes, that is what the 033 is. It is a reference as to what key is required in the pump shaft.

Is there a "Re-Con" sticker on the top of that pump?

No stickers of any kind - but any that might have been there could easily have come off or been removed. I would sorta expect that any "Re-con" markings would be more permanent, such as stamped on... Maybe not?

Another point of interest, I would have thought that the effort to rotate the shaft on a VP-44 would be sorta stiff, and with pronounced "bumps" as the plungers hit the peaks on the cam lobes - but this one seems to turn rather easily - but smoothly, with some added resistance on cam lobes, but still pretty easy. I suppose all that changes when actual fuel is being pumped, not air?

Story on this pump is that it was recently used as a warranty replacement on an '01 or so truck - then after only a few thousand miles use, the truck owner decided to go for the "Hot Rod" VP-44 version, and sold this one to his friend, a TDR member. Since this supposedly happened fairly recently, I would hope this would be a NEW, late model production unit, and not a rebuilt unit. It seems to have later (higher) numeral strings on various barcode labels and such, as compared to my pump on my '02 truck - lending support to my hope that it is even later production than my OEM stocker.

At any rate, it is only for backup potential - and I hope I never need to actually use it... But then again, it sure would be nice if it actually WORKED if I *do* need it! :-laf :-laf

181 is your date code pump was made in nov, 01

Hmmm - sure seems an odd string to indicate Nov. '01 - I'd sorta expect something more like "111" - 11th month of '01 - I wonder where the "8" figures in there... But then, if I had all the answers, I wouldn't be asking! :D :D

Sounds about right with the rest of the numerical strings as compared with the VP-44 on my truck - the truck was built in Feb. '02 - and the engine/VP-44 was undoubtedly assembled well before that date, and the VP-44 itself even earlier than that - thanks for the info.

Gary this may be a dumb question. . but. . anyways... on the -027/-028 pumps. . is that the last numbers on the pump plate. . or the first numbers on the paper tag on the pump controller. . I see that it is both on this pump. . didn't know if that was always true... .

Thanks

Bryan

I suspect it's just a coincidence with this pump - but will check the one on the truck if I can see it well enough with the other stuff in the way - but I *am* sure the one stamped on that pad IS accurate... Not much way so important a identifier would rely on a bit of paper and some glue for reference.
