has anyone had or heard of a VP-44 pump making noise when failing?

i have my dads truck in the shop right know and it has a noise coming from the front of the engine. it also seams to have lost full control of its fueling when under full load, sometimes it has no power and sometimes it has way more than it should(i don't know if you could ever have too much but this is close)

Note: lift pump pressures are good 10psi at wot under load(40 ft trailer) Truck is a '01 eth with 275hp injectors, no other mods

Thank you for your help--Doug

here os my $. 02.

I have one question.

Does your Dad's truck have a boost module?

I started with just 275's on my ETH. With the PS boost module installed WITHOUT the supplied elbow, boost would hit 25 psi at the manifold. This means that since the ECM will de-fuel when it sees High Out of Spec boost, I could not run 275's to their full potential on my truck without the module.

Actually I installed the module before anything else because my truck would de-fuel a little when it was stock... it would hit 22 psi at the manifold and then cut back.

Does his truck seem to run well, but then fall on its face after the turbo spools up under full load?

Does it have a P 1693 code set??

It has been suggested on the board that 275's do not require a boost module to use them to their full potential. I will say that this is wrong.

no codes no boost module and I don't doubt that you can't reach full potential without one but his injectors were hammered anyways so i just slapped 275s in

also this truck now has 235,000 mi on the ticker now and has had 3 lift pumps and numerous tanks of sub standard fuel run through it

235000 miles on an '01... wow!

I really cant tell you what the problem with the truck is, but if power is doing what you are saying it is, you are most likely de fueling. I know you probably do not want to spend money on a Boost module... . especially if that is not your problem... . but if you can borrow one and plug it in... . go for it. Also, the injectors will make the engine sound different.

It's not just the defueling that bothers me it is the over fueling that really makes me nervous. It drives like its got a comp and dd3s sometimes and sometimes it drives like someone traded ISB for VW TDI when nobody was looking all in the same mile of test drive.
