What is the general consensus on replacing an out of warranty injector pump?

Aftermarket? Dodge OEM?

I am looking at a 2002 1-ton dually and wondering what the worse case would be to replace one. It's a 6-speed HO and runs and drives well with 97k on the clock, at least by this rookie's estimation. I have been subscribed to this list for a couple of months now and have followed many of the threads and learning as much as I can. We're considering a 5th wheel or maybe a tag-along, just haven't decided which way. I kinda like the idea of having a bed available when I'm towing, so that is the reason I haven't decided which way to go. Either way it will be a toyhauler to carry motorcycles.

Thanks in advance for any input offered on the VP-44. :)

my only VP replacement was under waranty so its OEM stock. For the $$ I'd go with a "built" pump.

But I must say 5th wheels/goosenecks pull and ride and carry the load much much better than any tag along. If your getting a toy hauler, put your stuff in the hauler, not the bed. Plus I like backing up better with the hitch in the bed.

1st question, is the VP dead  If it is still alive, why replace it

I would do the following wheather you replace it or not.

1. Increase the diameter of your fuel line from the tank all the way to the VP. This allows for more volume, (less restriction)=easier flow for fuel.

2. Ditch the inlett banjo fitting at the VP and put a 3/8th ID straight inlet fitting in its place. The VP can take as much as it wants and runs cooler.

3. The VP has an built in bypass set to 14 psi. If your not hot rodding or building allot of power then your fuel pressure to the VP should be fine if you set it at 18 psi.

4. Replace the lift pump if not already done with a FASS or somthing suitable that you feel is reliable.

5. Install a fuel cooler (Transmission Cooler) between the VP inlet and the supply pump.

I have my original VP with 160,000 + turns on it and have never had a problem. ;)

6. If you replace the VP, go with the HotRod.

Have fun ;) :D

I appreciate the advice about fuel system upgrades for better flow. My original question was just for general knowledge in the event it does fail. What kind of replacement to use and cost was all I really wanted to know.

Who makes a Hot Rod pump?

I was interested in the Stanadyne filter and pump combo, anyone have any info they want to share?
